Young champs crowned at Juniors Track Nationals

The nation’s youngest track racers were awarded Stars-and-Stripes Saturday at the Richardson Bike Mart USA Cycling Juniors Track National Championships. The 10-12 and 13-14 omniums and 17-18 scratch and keirin races highlighted the penultimate day of competition at the Superdrome in Frisco, Texas.

With national titles determined through a compilation of three events throughout the week for younger age divisions, competition wrapped up in both the 10-12 and 13-14 age groups on Saturday.

Chazmichael Morales(El Segundo, CA/Cycles Veloce/Team Simple Green/Bike Religion) pulled out fifth place in today’s scratch race to earn 12 total points and win the 13-14 men’s omnium national title. Morales was tied with silver-medalist Broderick Hartley (Lilburn, GA/Fulton Flyers Cycling Club) going into the points race and pulled out the overall win by just two points.

“Going into today’s points race I knew I had to dig deep and I got it done,” explained Morales, who won this event two years ago as a 12 year-old. “As you get older and the competition gets harder you definitely appreciate it more.”

In the women’s 13-14 omnium Hannah McDade (Tigard, OR/Beaverton Bicycle Club) earned a comfortable five-point win with steady performances throughout the week. Danielle Mullis (Rochester, MI Wolverine Sports Club) earned the silver and Julyn Aguila (El Paso, TX/Major Motion Cycling Club) the bronze.

Jules Gilliam (Manhattan Beach, CA/CPT-Connie Cycling Junior Racing Team) and Weston Giem (Valencia, CA/The TEAM) finished comfortably on top in the 10-12 men’s omnium as did Summer Moak (Katy, TX/Team Spincycle) on the women’s side.

In the day’s other national championship contests, the 17-18 scratch races and the keirin contests, the 2010 kilo world championship bronze medalist Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, PA/Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) gathered his third Stars-and-Stripes of the week with a win over Ben Barthel (Santa Barbara, CA/Echelon Santa Barbara) and Jeremiah Dyer (Valdese, NC) in the scratch. Earlier in the day Baranoski edged Kaleb Koch (Glenview, IL/Cycle Sports Foundation Inc./ISCorp Cycling Team) and Simon Ferguson (San Diego, CA/Adams Avenue Bicycles/G S Adams Avenue Bicycles) in the keirin.

“My goal this week was to prove that I am ready to go take on the world,” said Baranoski. “We had four false starts (in the keirin) and it was finally clean on our fifth start. Once we got going I was able to get right behind Kaleb. With one and a half to go I was able to get by him, took the lead and held on to it. It’s been a great week; hot, but its 90 degrees almost anywhere in the country right now.”

Jennifer Valente (San Diego, CA/Adams Avenue Bicycles/G S Adams Avenue Bicycles) also won both the women’s 17-18 scratch and the keirin to cap off an impressive week. In the keirin she pulled away from Chloe Chepigin (Chappaqua, NY/Young Medalists/ Team Rothrock) who earned silver, and in the scratch she edged Kate Wilson (Los Angeles, CA/CPT/Connie Cycling Junior Racing Team).

The USA Cycling Juniors Track National Championships will wrap up on Sunday morning beginning at 8 a.m. with the 17-18 team sprint contests, the 15-16 points race and men’s Madison. A compilation of their various national competition contests, the 15-16 omnium national champions will also be decided on Sunday.

Throughout the national championships, winners of the men’s and women’s 17-18 individual events will challenge to earn start spots for the UCI Juniors Track World Championships in Moscow, Russia, August 17-24. For more information on these qualification procedures, including requirements for being a funded team member, please see the athlete nomination worksheet.
