Women's team pursuit 5th at Track World Championships

Women's Team Pursuit
The American trio of Dotsie Bausch (Irvine, Calif./OUCH Pro Cycling), Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./OUCH Pro Cycling) and Lauren Tamayo (Asheville, N.C./Exergy Twenty12) recorded the second-best time they'd performed together in the event. This trio holds the national record of 3:19.569, set in Aguascalientes, Mexico at the 2010 Pan American Championships.
The silver medalists in this event at the 2011 World Championships completed three kilometers in 3:21.765, which placed them fifth in the qualifying round.
The riders from Australia registered a 3:17.053 during their qualifying ride to temporarily stake a claim to the world record previously owned by Great Britain. The British trio reclaimed the record after finishing in 3:16.850 before putting the record further out of reach in the medal round, finishing in 3:15.720 to earn the world championship. Australia won the silver while Canada was three-tenths of a second faster than New Zealand to win the bronze medal.
"I think we executed the ride exactly like we needed to," Tamayo said. "Unfortunately, it wasn't quite fast enough. It's the fastest we've gone as a team since Aguascalientes, so you can't ask for much more there. Obviously, we have some work to do to get faster."
Women's Points Race
The 25-kilometer women's points race, an event in which Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Exergy Twenty12) finished sixth at the 2011 UCI Track World Championships, was extremely animated and high energy. Higgins got on the scoreboard early in the race, collecting one point after placing fourth in the second sprint. After the fourth sprint, Jasmin Glaesser (CAN) attacked the field and rode alone for a short while before being joined by Anastasia Chulkova (RUS), Caroline Ryan (IRL) and Wan Yiu Wong (HKG). After the riders earned the points for the fifth and sixth sprints, the four women lapped the field, each collecting 20 points for their efforts.
Higgins finished the race in 15th place with one point. Chulkova topped the podium with 31 points, three points ahead of silver-medalist Glaesser while Ryan took the bronze medal home with 24 points.
"The race was pretty much what I expected," Higgins said. "The girls who won took a lap on the field. At an international points race that is what you should expect. Unfortunately, the moves I went with weren't the moves that ended up sticking, but that's bike racing. We go on to the next race and learn. Luckily, I've got another shot at the scratch race tomorrow."
Men's Omnium
After the first three events of the men's omnium, Lea sits in 18th place after finishing 13th in the flying lap, 21st in the points race and 19th in the elimination race.
The men's omnium, a six-race event spanning two days, began Thursday with the flying lap. Bobby Lea (Topton, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) completed his lap in 13.464, which, as he completed it, stood third. After all of the 24 competitors completed their 250-meter lap, Lea's mark placed 13th.
A crash about midway through a very animated points race separated the pack and allowed four riders to lap the field and pick up 20 points apiece. Lea, who was caught behind the crash, was unable to overcome the point deficit as he finished 21st.
Lea placed 19th in the aggressive, fast-paced elimination race, meaning he was the sixth of the 24 riders eliminated.
"I'm not very pleased with where I'm standing," Lea said. "Sitting 18th overall is not where anyone wants to be. As far as this event in itself is concerned, it's hard to be satisfied with that. The second day of the omnium is always my favorite. The two time trial events - the pursuit and the kilo - are known factors to me."
The final three races of the men's omnium, individual pursuit, scratch race and the one-kilometer time trial, are on Friday's docket.
Coming Up
The competition continues Friday and the Americans will compete in the men's sprint, the last three contests of the men's omnium, the women's scratch race and the first three races of the women's omnium. The women's sprint is also slated for Friday's competition.
