Cali, Colombia (Feb. 26, 2014) -- American Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./TWENTY16 Pro Cycling) finished 4th in the women’s scratch race on Wednesday during the opening day of competition at the 2014 UCI Track World Championships.

Belgium's Kelly Druyts earned the gold medal in the scratch race. Defending world champion Katarzyna Pawlowska of Poland took the silver medal while Evgeniya Romanyuta of Russia claimed the bronze medal for the second straight year.

Valente rode a quiet race, rarely showing herself at the front. With five laps to go, Druyts slipped away with Ireland's Caroline Ryan and held the lead even after Ryan was dropped. The race came down to a field sprint for silver with Valente attempting to come over the top of Romanyuta. It came down to a bike throw at the line with Valente narrowly missing out on bronze.

The UCI Track World Championships run through Sunday. Thursday's action features the women's team pursuit and will include the American team of Valente, Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./UnitedHealthcare), Lauren Tamayo (Asheville, N.C./UnitedHealthcare), Ruth Winder (Lafayette, Calif./UnitedHealthcare) and Kimberly Geist (Emmaus, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation-Team Alliance Environmental).
