USA wins two golds on first day of BMX World Championships

Print Auckland, New Zealand (July 24, 2013) — Competition at the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships began Wednesday at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, with the challenge class races. Michael Gonzales (Watsonville, Calif.) topped the 14-year-old boys podium while Colin Hudson (Longmont, Colo./Factory Crupi) won the 16-year-old boys category. In all, the United States registered eight top-three results, including gold medals for Gonzales and Hudson.
Kohl Piluso (Chico, Calif.) placed second among 10-year-old boys. Jamie McHenry (Angier, N.C./Answer-Rennen) also earned a silver medal for her performance among 11-year-old girls while Julian Dittrick (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the runner-up among 11-year-old boys. Jordan Scott (Henderson, Nev./Redman-Rockstar) climbed to the second step of the 12-year-old girls podium. Carly Dyar (Gilbert, Ariz./Redline Challenge) added America's fifth silver medal with her result in the women's 17-and-over. Kalvin Davis (Albuquerque, N.M./Supercross) collected a bronze medal in the men's 17-24 category.
Gonzales, who has now won four-straight world championships, won each of his qualifying races on his way to striking gold. Gonzales won three motos to advance to the 1/8 final where he won his moto to advance to the 1/4 final. The 14-year-old Gonzales advanced to the semifinal after winning his quarterfinal.
“It feels good to win, it’s the greatest feeling pretty much," Gonzales said. "I came over hoping I could do the best I could do and luckily I pulled off the win. Hopefully I can do the same tomorrow when I race for the Cruiser title.”
Hudson collected his fourth consecutive world championship, winning the 16-year-old boys category. After a mistake in the 1/2 final, Hudson started the main in the least desirable eighth lane. Hudson quickly worked his way to front of the pack, winning the main. Raomain Racine (FRA) finished second while Bruno Andrade (BRA) placed third.
Also in that age group, Makieva Hopson (North Las Vegas, Nev./Vendetta-Elite Bicycles) advanced to the 1/2 final while Gavin Nelson (Chico, Calif./Dirty 530- Supercross-Tan), Antonio Bonessi (Hendersonville, N.C./Hyper-Rennen-1-9 Wheel) and Damian Ontiveros (Fremont, Calif.) did not advance past the qualifying round.
"Going into the main, I was very nervous for the race outcome, but I knew deep down that if I was to get the best gate of the day for myself and used all the lessons I've learned over the past year that I could still have a good shot at the win," Hudson said. "The race opened up to me after the first turn, and I sat in third, chasing the top two riders. Going down the third straightaway, I put everything I had into trying to get into position leading into the last turn to give me a shot at overtaking the two riders, and it all just happened my way. As I exited the last turn and dove on the top two riders, I overtook the lead, and pedaled as hard as I could down the last straight. The feeling was just so great, believing in myself, my training, and thinking of all the support that USA Cycling and my coach had given me, made that win the best of my BMX racing career."
Scott earned her silver medal after advancing through her qualifying motos with two wins and a second-place result in the qualifying motos. She won her 1/4 and 1/2 final races to advance to the final where she finished second to Jessie Smith (NZL).
In the 14-year-old boys age group, Colin Whittington (Arlington, Texas/Factory Crupi) advanced to the 1/4 final. Dylan Moreira (Orlando, Fla./Blackcrown Products) did not advance past the 1/8 final and Nathan Scott (Henderon, Nev./Redman Rockstar Devo) did not advance past the qualifying moto.
Dittrick's silver medal among 11-year-old boys came after he dropped his only race of the day. Dittrick, who won a world championship in 2012, won all three of his qualifying motos, his 1/4 final, and his semifinal before finishing second to Ryan Martin (GBR) in the final.
McHenry advanced through the qualifying round after winning two of her three motos and placing second in the third contest. She added a win in the 1/4 final before placing second to Des'Ree Barnes (AUS) in the 1/2 final and the final.
In the 10-year-old boys' race, Piluso finished second while Amakye Andersen (Tucson, Ariz./Staats Bicycles) and Ethan Moore (Scottsdale, Ariz./Redline Challenge) finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Piluso and Andersen won each of his three motos in the qualifying round while Moore placed second in each of his three motos. Andersen won the 1/8 final, edging Moore in the race. Piluso also won his moto as the three riders advanced to the 1/4 final. Andersen and Piluso continued their winning ways as each won his 1/4 race. Moore placed third in his 1/4 contest to advance to the 1/2 with Piluso and Andersen. Piluso won his 1/2 final, facing Andersen, who placed third. In the other 1/2 final, Moore finished second to advance to the final. In the final, Piluso finished second to Jesse Asmus (AUS) while Andersen and Moore finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Benicio Sereni (Newark, Calif./Hooligans Racing-Fairfax) did not advance through the qualifying motos in the 10-year-old boys age group.
Anna Johnson (Garland, Texas/Factory Crupi) and Avery Moore (Scottsdale, Ariz./Redline Challenge) donned the red, white and blue in the 13-year-old girls contest. Johnson would place fourth after qualifying second in her moto and third in her 1/4 final and 1/2 final races. She finished fourth in her main, which was won by Shelby Green (AUS). Moore advanced to the 1/2 final where she placed seventh and did not advance.
Ryan Pettigrew (Watsonville, Calif./JrBicycles.com-Speedco) and Miles Wamsley (Henderson, Nev.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 15-year-old boys category. Wamsley won each of his qualifying motos while Pettigrew finished second in each of his three qualifying motos. Each of them placed second in the 1/8 final. Pettigrew won his 1/4 final while Wamsley placed third to advance to the 1/2 final where each placed second to advance to the main.
In the 16-year-old girls contest, Jaydra Kinsey (Bend, Ore./Black Box-Tradition-DKOI) advanced to the 1/4 final and Shannon Bowles (Gillette, Wyo./Identiti) did not advance past the qualifying round.
Kelsey Van Ogle (Auburn, Wash./Phoenix Bicycles) won each of her three qualifying motos before not finishing the 1/2 final of the 15-year-old girls. Shayla Blackmore (Durango, Colo./Phoenix Factory Racing) also advanced to the 1/2 final.
Reid Austin (Grand Junction, Colo./Redman-Rockstar) and Dillon Turner (Morrison, Colo./Bikeparts.com) represented the United States in the 12-year-old boys age group. Austin finished eighth in the final while Turner did not advance past the 1/4 final. Austin won two of the three motos, placing third in the second moto. Turner finished second in each of his three qualifying motos to advance to the 1/4 final. Austin won his 1/4 final to advance to the semifinal while Turner finished fifth to conclude his competition. Austin finished second to Tye Cooper (AUS) in the 1/2 final before placing eighth in the final.
Justin Hendley (Chandler, Ariz.) advanced to the 1/2 final of the 13-year-old boys, but finished eighth in that race and did not advance.
In the 14-year-old girls contest, Emily Grice (Asheville, N.C./Doublecross Bikes) advanced to the 1/4 final, where she was eliminated. Anna Beynon (Cumming, Ga./Vendetta) did not advance from the qualifying motos.
Nineteen-year-old Carly Dyar (Gilbert, Ariz./Redline Challenge) earned the silver medal in the women's 17-and-over category. Madison Janssen (AUS) won the main ahead of Dyar while Catherine Soucaze (FRA) too third. The United States picked up a bronze medal in the men's 17-24 group when Kalvin Davis (Albuquerque, N.M./Supercross) finished third in the main. Three riders — Colby Murphy (Drummonds, Tenn./Nema-Ssquared), Justin Dyar (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Brandon Cato (Oakland, Calif./Kids N Mo-510 Bay Area) — did not advance past the 1/4 final. Three more riders — Colby Fisher (Tallahassee, Fla./Troy Lee Designs-Spy-6Ft), Joshua Balder (Cannon Falls, Minn.) and Derrik Blackmore (Durango, Colo.) — did not advance past the qualifying round. Eight Americans contested the men's 30-and-over category. Two of them, Jonas Harmon (Logan, Utah/Factory GT) and Andy Purdy (Oak Park, Calif.) did not advance past the 1/2 final. John Pfeiffer (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Jim Severt (Sparks, Nev.) and Joshua Shipp (Phoenix, Ariz./Works Development) were eliminated in the 1/8 final while Shan Hatfield (Acworth, Ga.), Robert Carnahan (San Jose, Calif./Calabazas Cyclery) and Cody Wilson (Apple Valley, Calif./Eliminator-Supercross) did not advance past the qualifying round. A pair of Americans competed in the men's 25-29 group. Frank Hoskins (Jeffersonville, Ind.) advanced to the 1/2 final before falling. Nathan Mellone (Apple Valley, Calif.) did not pass the qualifying round.
In the only non-challenge category of the day, Matt Pohlkamp (Cincinnati, Ohio) represented the United States well in the masters 30-and-over category, placing fifth in the main.
Competition continues Thursday at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. The morning session features challenge classes for riders ages nine and under. The evening session features cruiser challenge classes.
