USA Cycling Development Foundation awards four scholarships

Print Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 4, 2013) — The USA Cycling Development Foundation has recognized four student-athletes with the annual John Stenner and Joshua Kuck Memorial Scholarships.
Zebulon Hanley was one of the recipients of the John Stenner Memorial Scholarship.
The John Stenner Memorial Scholarships are based on academic achievements, athletic accomplishments and service to the community with an emphasis on collegiate team involvement and leadership. Stenner scholarships are funded by donations to the USA Cycling Development Foundation in the name of John Stenner, one of the founders of collegiate cycling.
The Joshua Kuck Memorial Scholarships are based on outstanding achievements in the areas of cycling safety, advocacy and education. The program is funded through the USA Cycling Development Foundation by directed donations from the friends and family of Joshua Kuck, a University of South Florida collegiate cyclist who was killed on his bike in 2007.
ZEBULON HANLEY — United States Air Force Academy
Hanley, who is the second student in one of the service academies to receive one of these scholarships, is holding a 3.97 grade point average majoring in operations research and economics as a senior at the United States Air Force Academy. As a cyclist, Hanley has served as the Air Force Academy's cycling team's cadet-in-charge of training since the squad did not have a coach. He served as the race director for the Academy's road race, which featured 550 registrants, in April 2011. Hanley is also active in the community. He volunteered his time to two significant events at the Academy. Hanley worked on the Academy Assembly and National Character and Leadership Symposium. He also assisted with the Colorado High School Mountain Bike State Championships for two years and offered his time to the Ride2Recovery with his teammates. Additionally, Hanley is a tutor for struggling students at a local middle school.
Christina Birch has been an integral cog in MIT's success and has been awarded one of the John Stenner Memorial Scholarships.
Birch holds a 5.0 grade point average as she pursues her Ph.D. in biological engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while competing as a valuable member of MIT's cycling team. The third MIT student to receive one of these two scholarships, she finished second in the Division II women's omnium at the 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships. She also helped the team win the team time trial, placed third in the criterium and finished fourth in the road race to help her qualify for the Nature Valley Grand Prix Collegiate All-Star team. She also recorded three top-10 individual finishes to help the MIT team take the team omnium at that event. Birch placed fourth in the individual pursuit, sixth in the scratch race and seventh in the match sprint. She earned her B.S. in biochemistry and mathematics from the University of Arizona prior to attending MIT.
Joseph Iuliano received one of the Joshua Kuck Memorial Scholarships.
Iuliano earned a 3.82 grade point average as he earned his BS in organizational leadership, Masters in health and kiniesiology from Purdue University. He is currently pursuing a Masters degree in planning at the University of Arizona where he is focusing on sustainable urban design and healthy cities. While at Purdue, Iuliano appeared on the Dean's list each semester from 2006-12. Iuliano is also involved with the Purdue Cycling Club's Bike Tent, which strongly resembles the values of the Joshua Kuck Collegiate Cycling Scholarship. The Bike Tent is a weekly repair and education tent on Purdue's campus designed to provide free repairs, campus bicycle maps and encourage the campus community to ride. Iuliano also designed the campus bicycle maps with assistance from Campus Planning and Parking and Transportation.
Linnea Dixson also received the Joshua Kuck Memorial Scholarship.
Dixson is maintaining a 3.87 grade point average as a sophomore at the University of Wyoming majoring in physiology, kiniesiology. She was recognized as an outstanding student at the 2012 Keith and Thyra Thompson Arts and Sciences Convocation while earning a spot on the honor roll. As a cyclist, Dixson is equally impressive. She placed second to her teammate, Jill Behlen, in the Division II women's individual omnium at the 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Angel Fire, N.M. Dixson also follows Behlen as a scholarship recipient as Behlen received the Stenner Memorial Scholarship last year. The duo becomes the first teammates to earn the scholarship in consecutive years.
