U.S. elite and U23 men's rosters set for road world championships

Print Colorado Springs, Colo. (August 31, 2012) — USA Cycling on Friday announced the riders that will represent the United States at the 2012 UCI Road World Championships in Limburg, Netherlands. The event spans Sept. 16-23.
The five men who donned the red, white and blue in the Olympic Games will do so again as automatic nominations to contest the elite men’s race. The United States earned nine spots in the elite men’s road race, the maximum number for any country. Among the nine Americans slated to contest the race are the five Olympians: Timmy Duggan (Nederland, Colo./Liquigas-Cannondale), Tyler Farrar (Wenatchee, Wash./Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda), Chris Horner (San Diego, Calif./RadioShack-Nissan-Trek), Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./BMC Racing) and Tejay van Garderen (Boulder, Colo./BMC Racing). Those five will be joined by discretionary selections Brent Bookwalter (Athens, Ga./BMC Racing), Matthew Busche (Wauwatosa, Wisc./RadioShack-Nissan-Trek), Lucas Euser (Boulder, Colo./Spidertech p/b C10) and Alex Howes (Golden, Colo./Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda). Phinney and van Garderen are slated to contest the time trial.
The Americans are primed after many of the riders enjoyed a measure of success in the 2012 USA Pro Challenge in Colorado. Farrar won a pair of stages and finished in the green jersey after collecting the most points. Van Garderen won the second stage and wore the yellow leader’s jersey for three of the seven stages of the race. Phinney at the Pro Challenge won the seventh-stage time trial by 10 seconds and placed second to Farrar in the fifth stage after placing fourth in the road race and time trial at the 2012 Olympic Games. Duggan finished the USA Pro Challenge in 21st after animating many of the stages and scoring a fifth-place finish in the sixth stage atop Flagstaff Mountain.
The U23 men representing the U.S. will be automatic selections Robert Bush (Louisville, Ky./Chipotle-First Solar Development Team), Joe Dombrowski (Marshall, Va./Bontrager Livestrong Team) and Larry Warbasse (Traverse City, Mich./BMC-Hincapie Sportswear Cycling Team). Competing alongside them will be discretionary choices Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Bontrager Livestrong Team) and Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass./Bontrager Livestrong Team). Warbasse and Nate Brown (Covington, Tenn./Bontrager Livestrong Team) will contest the time trial.
Bush earned his automatic nomination after winning the U23 road race at the 2012 USA Cycling Elite, U23, Juniors and Paralympic Road National Championships in Augusta, Ga. Dombrowski, who recently won the Best Young Rider at the 2012 USA Pro Challenge in Colorado, earned his automatic nomination after becoming the first American to win the Giro Ciclistico d’Italia. Warbasse earned an automatic nomination when he placed fifth in the Ronde de L’Isard in France in May. Boswell finished second in the prestigious U23 Liege Bastogne Liege race in Belgium in April.
The riders representing the U.S. in the elite women’s and juniors races were announced on Aug. 24.
