U.S. collects 14 medals at the UWCT finals

Four riders earned medals in the road race and time trial competitions, including three women who each won both of their contests. Anne Marie Miller (New York, N.Y./Fuoriclasse-Discover Chiropractic-Century Road Club Assoc.) topped the women's 55-59 field in the time trial and the 61-kilometer road race. Molly Van Houweling (Berkeley, Calif./Metromint Cycling), who won the women's 35-39 time trial and placed second in the road race in 2011, won the women's 35-39 time trial and 96-kilometer road race. Megan Cea (West Harrison, N.Y./Team Danbury Audi) won the women's 16-29 challenger class time trial and 96-kilometer road race.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, the United States won seven medals, including five gold medals, in the competition's opening event, a 25.7 time trial. Miller, Van Houweling and Cea won the women's 55-59, women's 35-39 and women's 16-29 challenger class, respectively. Cale Reeder (Cameron Park, Calif./Echelon-Charity of Choice) won the men's 45-49 contest. Richard Feldman (Sherman Oaks, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) topped the men's 40-44 podium after winning the same men's 40-44 contest in 2011. Additionally, James Mattis (Mountain View, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized), who struck gold in the men's 35-39 road race and won bronze in the time trial in 2011, took the silver medal in the men's 35-39 time trial. Katie Marshall (White Plains, N.Y./Tarmac Cycling) earned the bronze medal in the women's 50-54 time trial.

In the 61-kilometer road race, the Americans earned a gold medal as Miller won the women's 55-59 race by about seven minutes.

In the 96-kilometer contest, the U.S. earned a pair of gold medals and a silver medal. In the women's 35-39 road race, the United States took the top two spots on the podium as Van Houweling won the race by over eight minutes over silver medalist Kathryn Curi Mattis (Mountain View, Calif./Webcor-Alto Velo). Cea topped the women's 16-29 challenger class podium after completing her road race in 3:33:44. Richard Mull (Malibu, Calif./Velo Club LaGrange) placed third in the men's 60-64 contest. Alexander Osborne (Berkeley, Calif./IronDataThirstyBearCycling.com) took home the silver medal in the men's 50-54 race, finishing just one second behind the gold medalist Gary Beneke (RSA). Reeder narrowly missed the podium when he placed fourth in a four-rider sprint in the men's 45-49 race.

In the most grueling race of the competition, the 112-kilometer road race, the United States collected a bronze medal. James Mattis won a three-rider sprint to win the bronze medal in the men's 35-39 race.
