Updates made to 2013 NRC and NCC, points tables released

  
  


Colorado Springs, CO (January 28, 2013) — USA Cycling has updated its 2013 National Racing Calendar (NRC) and 2013 National Criterium Calendar (NCC). The NRC and NCC points tables used to determine individual and team rankings have also been announced.

Calendar Updates

Two events have been cancelled and removed from the NCC: the Tour of Vail Criterium and the Bucks County Classic Criterium. The Tour of Vail Criterium was scheduled for August 17 in Vail, Colo. The Bucks County Classic Criterium was scheduled for September 15 in Doylestown, Pa.

Three events have also been removed from the NRC: the Tour of the Battenkill, the American Cycling Open and the Keystone Open. The Tour of the Battenkill was scheduled for April 14 in Cambridge, N.Y. The American Cycling Open was to be held on June 2 and the Keystone Open on July 7, both in Philadelphia, Pa.

In addition, the Thompson Bucks County Classic has moved up a week and will now be held on September 7. The event is a tier one men’s race in Doylestown, Pa.

These edits were made by request from the individual race directors after the status of each event had changed.

New Point Distribution Structure

The points tables have been modified to reflect a new structure of earning points on the NRC and NCC. In 2013, NRC points vary according to UCI or non-UCI inscription as well as multi- or single-day status. Points are also available to the top three riders in a stage for a multi-day race and to overall winners of the king of the mountain and sprint classifications.

In the NCC, points are awarded based on a two-tier system. A list of criteria created with input from teams and race directors is used to determine which events earn tier one or tier two status. Those races meeting six or more criteria are labeled tier one. Points awarded to riders placing in multi-day criterium omniums are based on the final omnium classification. Additionally, points are awarded to the top three riders in each stage of a multi-day criterium omnium. However, stage points do not apply to single-day races.

“The new points structures of the NRC and NCC came about after conferring with the professional and domestic elite teams as well as the race directors who attended our November race director’s summit,” explained Micah Rice, USA Cycling’s vice president of national events. “Our hope is that this new structure will create a clearer and fairer event classification moving forward.”

The NCC kicks off with the Old Pueblo Grand Prix, a tier two event for men and women on March 9 in Tucson, Ariz. The NRC begins April 4 in Redlands, Calif., with the four-day Redlands Bicycle Classic, also tier two event for men and women.
