Points of Interest

  • Tyler has been on three different MTV shows: Date My Mom (where Tyler was the one dating the mom); Parental Control (Tyler was the one the mom chose to date her daughter); and MADE (Tyler was charged with transforming a stereotypical "SoCal girly-girl" into a BMX racer!).

Personal

At the tender age of two, Tyler Brown asked his mom to remove the training wheels from his bike so that he could ride with the bigger kids on his block. That was a daring moment for Tyler and his mom, Rhonda, both of whom took a risk on the future, though they probably didn't know it at the time. If he crashed, then it wasn't memorable enough to discourage the toddler from pursuing a bike racing career. From toddler to pre-teen, Tyler kept on riding until he started racing at age 12. He fell in love with racing and has persevered ever since, even when things weren't going his way (as they sometimes do). According to Tyler,  Rhonda never quit on him, which prevented him from quitting on himself. He credits her with having the most influence over his career and for pushing him until his goals became realities.

Tyler qualified for the Olympic trials in 2008 and that confirmed what his results had already revealed, that he's bound for the international podium. Each BMX racer who's in the hunt for a chance Olympics has arrived at this place by sacrificing just a little bit more than his rivals. Tyler's packed training schedule resonates with pretty much every other top-level pro in BMX. He admits that sometimes it does get hard but during those moments, you have to ask yourself, "How much do you really want it?" His answer is so simple that it's baffling there aren't more professional athletes.

"If you do (want it), you always find the motivation to keep going," he remarked. To balance out the intensity of training for racing, the process is a bit more concrete. "As far as off the race track, we do gym, sprints, and some mental training. Then the usual focus on stretching, nutrition, and rest!"
