Two records, seven titles awarded on third day of Elite Track Nats

Print The third day of the 2011 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships witnessed unofficial track and national records and crowned national champions in seven categories in front of more than 600 spectators Friday at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Cal
The morning session featured qualifying heats for the men’s team pursuit, men’s sprint, women’s team pursuit along with the men’s and women’s three-kilometer individual pursuit for paracyclists. In the evening, national champions in the team pursuit, women’s kierin, men’s sprint and the paracycling individual pursuit were crowned.
World championship silver medalists Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./OUCH Pro Cycling), Jennie Reed (Seattle, Wash./OUCH Pro Cycling) and Dotsie Bausch (Irvine, Calif./OUCH Pro Cycling) set an unofficial Home Depot Center Velodrome track record en route to winning the women’s team pursuit national title. The trio nipped the previous record of 3:27.5, set by the Ukrainian team during the 2008 World Cup, completing the three kilometer event in 3:27.448.
"It's awesome. This is our homebase,” Hammer said. “Being American, we obviously want to have the fastest time for women ever ridden here. That's something we had to put in the books."
"It's pretty special," Bausch added.
Michael Blatchford recognizes the effort of his opponent, Giddeon Massie, in the final round of the men's sprint.In the men’s sprint, Michael Blatchford (Cypress, Calif./Rubicon Cycling-Team Rubicon-ORBEA), who is on the comeback trail after a two-year hiatus, swept through each of the three rounds to secure the gold medal in the men’s sprint. Blatchford’s housemate, Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion), also swept through the quarterfinals and semifinals in two races before falling to Blatchford in the finals. Kevin Mansker (Long Beach, Calif./Rubicon Cycling) outsprinted Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, Calif./Project London 2012) to earn the bronze. Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) bested the four-rider field to place fifth.
“Coming to nationals is a stepping stone,” Blatchford said. “It's great to be in front of a home crowd again. It's been years since I've done that. I've been racing all summer and nothing has been here. It's good to come back to the boards and know that it's still in the tank. To have the jersey is pretty sweet."

In the women’s kierin, 22-year-old Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa./CPT-Home Depot Center) topped the women’s field in a sprint to the finish, narrowly edging Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/Sugar Cycles), who earned the silver medal.
Fresh off representing the United States of America at the Junior Track World Championships in Moscow, Russia in August, Mathew Lipscomb (Decatur, Ga./Greenville Spinners), Paul Lynch (Colchester, Conn./Hot Tubes Development Team) and Gregory Daniel (Englewood, Colo./Chipotle Junior Development Team) teamed up with Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif./Yahoo Cycling Team) to top the men’s team pursuit podium Friday night. The quartet posted a 4:24.420 to better the Broadmark Capital team of Zack Noonan (Kutztown, Pa), Roman Kilun (Oakland, Calif.), Daniel Harm (Southworth, Wash.) and Phillip Gaimon (Tucker, Ga.) by more than five seconds.
During the morning session of the qualifying round of the men’s team pursuit, the four-man team of Lawrence Nolan (Fremont, Calif./Team Specialized Racing), Dan Vogt (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Kentucky Flyers Cycling), Robert Black (Alachua, Fla./Saroff Racing Team) and Kurt Bickel (McKinney, Texas/Joe’s Pro Bikes) unofficially set a new masters 45-and-over team pursuit national record with a time of 4:40.084.
In the paracycling individual pursuit races Aaron Trent (Colorado Springs, Colo./Speedfix Racing) won the men’s C4 contest while Joseph Berenyi (Oswego, Ill./PSIMET Racing) narrowly edged Mark Gyulafia (Portland, Ore./Guinness Cycling Team) to win the men’s C5 competition. In the men’s BVI race, the duo of Clark Rachfal (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Bicycle Racing Team) and David Swanson (Tucson, Ariz./White Mountain Road Club-Landis-Trek) topped the podium. Michael Farrell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) outsprinted William Mitchel-Chesebro (Carmel Valley, Calif./VRC-NOW-MS Society) to win the men’s C3 race. The team of Karissa Whitsell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Lisa Turnbull (Springfield, Ore.) defeated Kimberly Borowicz (Evanston, Ill/Smart Cycling) and Kristen Meshberg (Lyons, Ill./ABD Cycle Club) to emerge victorious in the women’s BVI race. In the women’s C2 race, Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Time Warner Cable Sport Racing) showed why she is the reigning world champion by catching silver-medalist Barbara Buchan (Boise, Idaho/US Paralympic Team). Greta Neimanas (Colorado Springs, Colo./Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12) narrowly edged Jennifer Schuble (Homewood, Ala.) to win the women’s C5 competition.
Saturday’s action will feature the points races, women’s sprint and the men’s kierin.
