Two gold medals highlight Day 2 of Pan Am Track Championships

  
  


(Sept. 11, 2014) – Team USA picked up two gold medals and two top-five finishes on Sept. 11 at the second day of the 2014 Pan American Continental Track Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

The four-member women’s team pursuit squad of Amber Gaffney (Claremont, Calif./TWENTY16 Pro Cycling), Kim Geist (Emmaus, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation-Team Alliance Environmental), Beth Newell (Oakland, Calif./JAKROO Racing Team) and Jenn Valente (San Diego, Calif./TWENTY16 Pro Cycling) ascended the podium after assembling the top time in the final, besting Cuba, Venezuela and Colombia. The Americans qualified earlier in the day with a time of 4:26.173 before putting the finishing touches on the Pan Am championship in the evening session.
 
Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Custom Velo) earned gold in the men’s individual pursuit, pacing the field in 4:16.565, ahead of Mauro Agostini’s (ARG) 4:20.117 second-place finish and Victor Moreno (VEN), who won the bronze medal contest in 4:19.714.
 
After winning his morning heat and placing third in his round two heat, Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Custom Velo) finished fourth in the men’s keirin behind Fabian Puerta (COL), Hugo Barrette (CAN) and Hersony Canelon (VEN).
 
Missy Erickson (San Pedro, Calif./Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic) picked up fifth in the women’s 500m time trial in 34.795 seconds, while Lisandra Guerra (CUB) took first in 33.036, Juliana Gaviria (COL) placed second in 33.689 and Mariesthela Vilera (VEN) finished third in 34.563.
 
Liam Donoghue (Boulder, Colo.) finished 12th in the men’s scratch race, finishing behind podium winners Jorge Luis Montenegro (ECU), Luis Miguel Mansilla (CHI) and Christopher Javi Mansilla (CHI). Donoghue finished second in his qualifying heat earlier in the day.
