Stephens scratches way to silver on first day of World Cup

  
  


(Dec. 5, 2014) – The second leg of the 2014-15 UCI Track Cycling World Cup kicked off in London, England, on Friday, where Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-To the Top) earned silver in the women’s scratch race to open up the Dec. 5-7 competition for Team USA.

Stephens picked up the lone U.S. medal of the day in the competition’s first final, trailing Colombian gold medalist Jannie Milena Salcedo Zambrano. Poland’s Katarzyna Pawlowska earned bronze.
 
In the men’s points race, Jacob Duehring (Irvine, Calif./GS Ciao-Horizon Organic-Einstein Bros Cycling) picked up a point after crossing fourth in the fourth sprint of the the race, finishing 14th overall. Elroy Teruel Rovira of Spain finished first with 43 points, followed by Belgium’s Kenney de Ketele with 34 points and Eduardo Sepulveda of Argentina with 31 points.
 
The U.S. team of Elizabeth Newell (Oakland, Calif./JAKROO Racing Team), Lauren Tamayo (Asheville, N.C./UnitedHealthcare), Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif./TWENTY16 Pro Cycling) and Ruth Winder (Lafayette, Calif./UnitedHealthcare) finished fourth in the women’s team pursuit qualifying round with a time of 4:32.523 before being disqualified in the first round against Great Britain. Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Ciara Horne of Great Britain eventually took gold in 4:22.194, followed by Australia’s Isabella King, Ashlee Ankudinoff, Amy Cure and Melissa Hoskins in 4:24.335 and Canada’s Allison Beveridge, Jasmin Glaesser, Kirsti Lay and Stephanie Roorda in 4:24.188.
 
Missy Erickson (San Pedro, Calif./Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic) and Mandy Marquardt (Allentown, Pa./Team Novo Nordisk) finished 17th in the women’s team sprint after recording a qualifying time of 35.580 seconds. Tianshi Zhong and Jinjie Gong of China took the top time of 33.010 seconds, just nipping Germany’s 33.024-second effort by Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte. Russia’s Ekaterina Gnidenko and Anastaiia Voinova rounded out the podium in 33.429 seconds.
 
Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Custom Velo), David Espinoza (Wellington, Fla.) and Danny Robertson (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) assembled a 46.254-second qualifier in the men’s team sprint, which was good for 20th overall. The German team of Joachim Eilers, Robert Forstemann and Rene Enders topped the field in 43.665 seconds, followed by Team Jayco-Ais’ (Australia) Matthew Glaetzer, Shane Perkins and Nathan Hart, who took second in 44.113 seconds, and New Zealand, comprised of Edward Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster, who won bronze in 43.863 seconds.
 
In the final contest of the evening, Great Britain’s Steven Burke, Mark Christian, Owain Doull and Andrew Tennant picked up men’s team pursuit gold in 4:01.151, besting New Zealand’s Pieter Bulling, Westley Gough, Cameron Karwowski and Myron Simposn in the gold medal match after the Kiwi’s recorded a 4:05.463 time. Casper Pedersen, Lasse Norman Hansen, Rasmus Christian Quaade and Casper von Folsach of Denmark took bronze in 4:02.248 to top Switzerland.
 
Coming up Saturday are men’s kierin and Madison qualifiers and finals, women’s points race and sprint qualifiers and finals, as well as men’s and women’s omnium scratch races, elimination races and individual pursuits.
