Small started the race very strong. Her split times were 25 seconds faster than the other riders, but as she turned into her third lap of the four-lap course, a sign on the fencing came loose, causing her to crash and lose time.

"The first couple of laps were solid," Small said. "I was putting in quality time over the other girls. Then at the start of the third lap a gust of wind blew a banner up and it grabbed my bars and I went down pretty quick. I got up quickly but then my chain came off. After that I tried to get back into a rhythm and do damage control."

She gained enough time to finish second overall, only 2.915 behind the winner Ingrid Drexel (MEX). Drexel finished the 20.8-kilometer course in 32:32.560 while Small completed it in 32:35.475. Serika Guluma (COL) placed third, finishing in 32:45.875.

Small will be joined by Ally Stacher (Asheville, N.C./Specialized-lululemon) and Tayler Wiles (Murray, Utah/Specialized-lululemon) in the road race on Saturday. A complete schedule for the event is available online.
