Silver medals by Gwin, Shaw headline MTB World Cup in Windham

In Saturday's elite men’s downhill competition, Gwin was just 1.581 seconds off of winner Josh Bryceland's (GBR) 2:24.332 finish. Troy Brosnan (AUS) took silver, 2.123 seconds back. Neko Mulally (Pisgah Forest, N.C./Trek World Cycling) placed 25th (+7.296), Austin Warren (Alpine, Calif./Pivot Cycles Factory DH Team) took 28th (+8.121), Eliot Jackson (Westlake Village, Calif.) came in 29th (+8.225), Kevin Aiello (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./KHS Bicycles) placed 33rd (+8.349), Logan Binggeli (Saint George, Utah/KHS Bicycles) finished 49th (+10.200) and Trevyn Newpher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) came in 63rd (+12.984).
Gwin stands third in the elite men’s downhill World Cup rankings with 925 points, trailing Bryceland with 1007 points and Brosnan with 964 points. Mulally is ranked ninth with 559 points.

Shaw continues to hold the top juniors men’s downhill World Cup ranking with 214 points, followed by Vergier with 200 points and Vernon with 181 points.
Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Team Norco Intl.) was the top U.S. competitor in the women’s elite downhill contest, finishing sixth. Emmeline Ragot (FRA) took first in 2:40.146, followed by Rachel Atherton (GBR) and Tracey Hannah (AUS). Kintner's time was 15.299 seconds behind Ragot. Alison Zimmer (Lincoln, Vt.) was 20th.
Kintner stands seventh in the elite women’s downhill World Cup rankings with 570, which trails leader Carpenter’s 1180 points and Ragot, who stands second with 1110 points.
Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College/Specialized Racing XC) posted the best finish for the U.S. in Sunday's cross-country races, finishing fourth in the men's U23 event, 1 minute, 15 seconds back of winner Jordan Sarrou of France. New Zealand's Anton Cooper was 41 seconds back of Sarrou for second place, while Great Britain's Grant Ferguson took third, one minute off the winning pace. Keegan Swenson (Park City, Utah/Cannondale Factory Racing) took 16th (+4:17), Sepp Kuss (Durango, Colo./RMCF-Devo) placed 25th (+7:19) and Richard Cypress Gorry (Bevard, N.C./Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team) placed 28th (+8:03). Also competing for the U.S. in the men's U23 race were Luke Vrouwenvelder (Chapel Hill, N.C./Champion-System / Cannondale), Ryan Standish (Durango, Colo.), Michael Sampson (Holderness, N.H.), Madison Matthews (Boalsburg, Pa.), Levi Kurlander (Durango, Colo.), Davis Bentley (Banner Elk, N.C.), Alex Meucci (Lithia, Fla.) and Casey Williams (Big Bear City, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized Cycling Team).
Grotts ranks sixth in the U23 men’s cross-country World Cup standings with 157 points, which follows leader Sarrou, who has 480 points. Swenson ranks 16th with 72 points, followed by Kuss in 59th with four points.
Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Specialized Factory Racing) was the top American in the women’s elite cross-country competition placing seventh, following Catharine Pendrel's (CAN) winning time of 1:25:47 by 1 minute, 52 seconds. Tanja Zakelj (SLO) took second, 29 seconds back, while Annika Langvad (DEN) placed third, 32 seconds behind Pendrel. Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo./LUNA Pro Team) finished 12th, Chloe Woodruff (Tucson, Ariz./Backcountry.com) took 24th, followed by Erin Huck’s (Boulder, Colo./Tokyo Joes-VCGraphix.com) 25th-place finish, while Rose Grant (Kalispell, Mont./Sportsman & Ski Haus) crossed the line in 30th. Larissa Connors (Silverado, Calif.), Evelyn Dong (Park City, Utah/Backcountry.com), Erica Zaveta (Brevard, N.C./Team Redline), Amy Beisel (Gunnison, Colo.) and Erica Tingey (Salt Lake City, Utah) also competed.
Gould is 15th in the women’s elite cross-country World Cup rankings with 449 points, trailing Switzerland's Jolanda Neff, who leads with 1050 points. Davison stands 26th with 270 points, Huck is 30th with 187 points, Dong ranks 35th with 154 points and Woodruff stands 46th with 116 points.
A third top-10 finish in Sunday's cross-country racing was turned in by Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Stanford University/Specialized Racing XC) as she took 10th in the women's U23 event. Courtney crossed the line 5 minutes, 22 seconds behind winner Margot Moschetti (FRA). Yana Belmoina (UKR) and Jovana Crnogorac (SRB) were second and third, respectively. Emily Shields (Advance, N.C.) placed 18th (+9:24), Ellen Noble (Kennebunkport, Maine/Bear Development Team) took 22nd (+11:09), Kaylee Blevins (Durango, Colo./Bear Development Team) was 24th (+11:44) and Elizabeth White (Manchester, N.H.) finished 27th (+13:06). Ginny Jeppi (Baltimore, Md./C3-Twenty20cycling.com) also competed.
In the women's U23 World Cup rankings, Courtney stands eighth with 145 points, following leader Moschetti's 340 points.
Stephen Ettinger (Bozeman, Mont./BMC Mountainbike Racing Team) took 27th in the men’s elite cross-country race, finishing 7 minutes, 13 seconds back of Nino Schurter (SUI) who won his second straight World Cup race with a winning time of 1:40:58. Schurter was followed by Julien Absalon (FRA), only six seconds back, and third-place finisher Lukas Fluckiger (SUI), 16 seconds behind. Russell Finsterwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./SRAM-Troy Lee Designs Race Team) finished 43rd (+9:22) and Cameron Dodge (Huntington Valley, Pa.) took 54th (+11:51). Mitchell Hoke (Boulder, Colo./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./BMC Project Dirt p/b KMC), William Melone (Bolton, Mass./Riverside Racing), Thomas Sampson (Holderness, N.H.), Cole Oberman (Philadelphia, Pa./RareDiseaseCycling), Christopher Hamlin (Jonesville, Vt./Bicycle Express-Kona), Joseph Clemenzi (Boulder, Colo.), Aaron Oakes (Richmond, Vt./Bicycle Express Racing), Ernie Watenpaugh (Telluride, Colo./Jack Daniels Fighting ALS) and Noah Tautfest (Northfield, Vt./Bicycle Express Racing) also competed.
Ettinger stands 27th in the elite men’s cross-country World Cup rankings with 255 points, which trails leader Absalon’s 1290-point mark. Finsterwald is ranked 52nd with 104 points.
On Friday, Woodruff and Courtney notched two top-10 finishes in the women's eliminator, placing fourth and seventh, respectively. In the men’s eliminator, Oberman was 19th and Williams finished 24th.
The 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup season concludes in Meribel, France, Aug. 21-24.
