Val di Sole, Italy (June 16, 2013) — At the first UCI Mountain Bike World Cup of the season that featured competitions in all three disciplines at the same venue,  Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./Specialized Racing DH) was the highest-placing American after riding to third in the men’s juniors downhill race on Sunday. In all, American riders earned 11 top-20 finishes in Val di Sole, Italy.

Shaw, who won the juniors downhill races at the Gravity Open at Plattekill Mountain and the Sea Otter Classic earlier this year and then placed seventh last week at the first downhill world cup of the season, finished just .188 of a second behind the winner, Dean Lucas of Australia, and less than three one-hundredths of a second behind runner-up Phil Atwill (GBR/Madison Saracen Downhill Team).

Americans scored four other top-20 finishes in the elite downhill races. On the men’s side, 2011 and 2012 World Cup overall standings winner Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./Specialized Racing DH) took fifth, while Neko Mulally (Reading, Pa./Trek World Racing) came in at 15th. In the women’s race, Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Team Norco International) finished 12th and Jacqueline Harmony (Tucson, Ariz./Team Harmony Pivot) crossed the line to place 18th.

Cross-Country Eliminator Starts Things Off

The cross-country eliminator kicked off competition in Val di Sole on Thursday. While no American men made it out of the qualifying round, Deidre York (Boulder, Colo./The Gear Movement Pro Cycling Team) led the way for the women with a 19th-place finish. Right behind her was Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Whole Athletes) in 20th.

Cross-Country Competitions

Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Specialized Factory Racing) landed in the top 10 of the elite women for her second consecutive world cup after a strong outing had her finishing eighth. Mary McConneloug (Chilmark, Mass./Kenda-Seven-Stan’s No Tubes) placed 20th as the next American to cross the line. Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Whole Athletes) also scored a top-20 result when she placed 14th in the juniors women’s race.

In the U23 men’s race, Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./BMC U23 Development Team) had a solid ride in an especially strong field to take 20th. He was followed shortly after by Sepp Kuss (Durango, Colo./Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Devo), who in his first year as a U23 rider battled back from a back row call-up to finish 25th.

The next world cup for all three disciplines — cross-country, eliminator and downhill — will be held in Vallnord, Andorra, on July 27 and 28.
