Pro Criterium National Championships streamed live on Saturday

  
  


The 2011 Herman Miller USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championships will take to the downtown streets in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday, Aug. 20 as part of the Herman Miller Grand Cycling Classic.

The national championship race begins at 11:45 a.m. ET and will be streamed live by the United States Olympic Committee.

Fifty riders will contest the 80-kilometer course, comprised of a 1.3-kilometer loop.

Half of the top 10 finishers from the 2010 professional criterium national championship are registered, including Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif./Kelly Benefits Strategies), who is the defending national champion. Holloway has been in strong form, collecting two criterium wins and a pair of second-place finishes at the Tour of America’s Dairyland in June.

Among the contenders to dethrone Holloway is Jacobe Keough (Sandwich, Mass./UnitedHealthcare), who is currently in second place in USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar (NRC) and surging to top the standings. Keough recently finished second at the criterium at the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove after winning the Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium. Keough also collected a first and a second place finish at the two criteriums at the Nature Valley Grand Prix. Jesse Anthony (Beverly, Mass./Kelly Benefits Strategies), who won the second stage of the 2011 Tour of Utah, will vie for the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. Anthony also was the runner-up in the criteriums at the Cascade Cycling Classic and the Nature Valley Grand Prix. Alexander Candelario (Reno, Nev./Kelly Benefits Strategies) finished seventh in last year’s professional criterium national title race and will vie for the crown this year. Candelario placed fourth in the criterium at the Tour de Nez on July 31. Kenneth Hanson (Santa Barbara, Calif./Jelly Belly p/b Kenda) placed fifth in last year’s event and finished third in the criteriums at the Glencoe Grand Prix and Nature Valley Grand Prix. Hanson also won the criterium at the Tulsa Tough on June 11. Shawn Milne (Beverly, Mass./Kenda Pro Cycling p/b Geargrinder) won this title in 2007 and won the criterium at the Gran Prix of Beverly in early August. Frank Pipp (Boulder, Colo./Bissell Pro Cycling) is in fourth in the men’s NRC standings after posting several strong results, including top-10 finishes at criteriums throughout the country. Frank Travieso (Winterville, Ga./Realcyclist.com) is also a threat after winning the Dilworth Criterium in May.

Also expected to contest the race is local rider Bradley White (Holland, Mich./UnitedHealthcare). White has helped Keough to his position in the NRC standings while collecting some strong results, himself.

The event, which includes a women’s NRC event, begins at 7:30 a.m. with the Inaugural Grand Cycling Challenge Ride. At 11:15 a.m., kids (9 and under) can compete in the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Kids’ Race. The 2011 Herman Miller USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship will begin at 11:45 a.m. The Senior Women’s Pro/Am race is slotted to begin at 2:20 p.m. before the Senior Men’s (Categories 1, 2 and 3) contest begins at 3:15 p.m. The Masters 40+ will contest at 4:05 p.m. before the Senior Men’s (Categories 4 and 5) race at 4:55 p.m.
