NTC: New names appear throughout NTC standings

  
  


The USA Cycling National Track Calendar (NTC) continued with its third and fourth competitions of the eight-event calendar, the U.S. Sprint Grand Prix at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center in Trexlertown, Pa., and the U.S. Grand Prix of Sprinting at the Velodrome at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs, Colo. While the endurance events were at a premium, there were sufficient sprint contests to earn points in the standings.

At the U.S. Grand Prix of Sprinting, several unofficial, age group world records were established in the flying 200. Jim Murdock went 12.3 unofficially topping Jim Kloss' previous mark of 12.636 for 70+. Rich Voss unofficially broke his own record for 55+ with a 10.960 bettering the previous mark of 11.047. Mike Paulin unofficially broke Todd Hayes' record for 45+ of 10.971 with a 10.959.

The competition in Colorado Springs did not hold all of the previously-scheduled races due to high winds blowing smoke from the Waldo Canyon Fire toward the velodrome.

SPRINT

There are three new names among the top five of the NTC men's sprint standings after the contests in Trexlertown and Colorado Springs. Jonathan Fraley (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./WDT-Allvoi International Cycling Team) brought his total to 50 points after adding eight points in at the U.S. Grand Prix of Sprinting. Andy Lakatosh (Trexlertown, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) moved into second place after accumulating 43 points in the two events. Lakatosh won the keirin at the U.S. Sprint Grand Prix before adding second and third-place finishes in the team sprint and keirin in Colorado. Danny Robertson (Rolling Meadows, Ill./WDT-Allvoi International Cycling Team) slipped one spot into third place, seven points behind Lakatosh. Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion) also has 36 points, but is in fourth due to Robertson's two wins at the Fixed Gear Classic. In the competitions in Pennsylvania and Colorado, Massie registered a second-place finish and pair of third-place results to rack up 36 points in the standings. One point behind Massie is Lakatosh's team sprint partner, Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA), who rounds out the top five with 35 points.

Similar to the NTC men's sprint standings, there are two new names on the NTC women's sprint standings. The leader, however, remains Tela Crane (Sammamish, Wash./Broadmark Capital), who finished third in the team sprint and second in the keirin at the U.S. Grand Prix of Sprinting to add 22 points, bringing her total to 62. Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./enCompass Racing) added 20 points to her total after her performance in Colorado was highlighted by a third-place finish in the keirin. Godby trails Crane by five points, but holds a 23-point cushion on Kimberly Edwards (Edmond, Okla.). Edwards, who moved up one spot from fourth place two weeks ago, finished fourth in the match sprint in Trexlertown to record eight points. Two new faces, Crane's team sprint partner Monique Sullivan (CAN/Team PCL) and Kristina Vogel (GER/Sprintteam Stadtwerke Erfurt), who teamed with Miriam Welte (GER/Track Cycling Team M-V) to win the team sprint in Colorado, are three points apart in fourth and fifth places in the standings, respectively. Sullivan also established a new velodrome record, completing her flying lap in 18.340.

ENDURANCE

The endurance riders did not compete in any events at the event in Colorado Springs, but they did contest a pair of events in Trexlertown.

Zack Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) and Franco Marvulli (SUI) maintain their spots in the top two slots of the NTC men's endurance standings. Marvulli trails Carlson by only three points. After his third-place finish in the scratch race, Zachary Kovalcik (Portland, Ore./Sizzle Pie Cycling p/b Veloforma) climbed into third place, one point behind Marvulli. There are two riders four points behind Kovalcik, Jean-Michel Lachance (CAN/Rossetti Devo Cycling Team) and Chris Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart). Lachance holds the fourth-place position due to his win in the scratch race at the Fixed Gear Classic.

Andreas Muller (AUT/I Challenge Myself-Rockstar) won the points race in Trexlertown while Bobby Lea (Topton, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) emerged victorious in the scratch race.

The top five of the NTC women's endurance standings are unchanged after the two events. Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/FCS-Rouse: p/b Mr. Restore) tops the list with 71 points, 29 points ahead of second-place Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Exergy Twenty12). Suzie Goodwin (McKinney, Texas/Crest-Richardson Bike Mart Cycling) is only six points behind Higgins with 36. Cindi Vargas (Humble, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) holds fourth place with 28 points while Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/Helens-Cannondale) and Payton Thomas (Grapevine, Texas/FCS-Rouse: p/b Mr. Restore) each have 26 points. Reynolds holds a slight edge due to holding the best single-race result between the two riders, a second-place result in the points race at the Fixed Gear Classic.

The riders of the NTC receive a bit of a respite before contesting the Marymoor Grand Prix at the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond, Wash., from July 20-22. The endurance riders will compete in the Madison as well as the points and scratch races. The sprinters have a full slate of match sprint, team sprint, keirin and time trial.
