NTC: Crane pulling away in the women's sprint standings

  
  


After the Marymoor Grand Prix at the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond, Wash., the USA Cycling National Track Calendar (NTC) has only three events remaining. With points becoming scarce, riders dug deep for extraordinary efforts as they competed in sprint and endurance events. The sprinters contested the match sprint, team sprint, keirin and time trial and the endurance riders competed in the points race, scratch race and Madison.

ENDURANCE

MEN
Zachary Kovalcik (Portland, Ore./Sizzle Pie Cycling p/b Veloforma) racked up 45 standings by sweeping the three endurance events in Washington bringing his season total to 81 points making him the new leader of the NTC men's endurance standings. Kovalcik won the scratch and points races as well the Madison (teaming with James Carney (Tucson, Ariz./C4 Cycling-C.A.R.E. for Cycling )). Kovalcik now has 81 points on the season, giving him a 22-point edge on Jean-Michel Lachance (CAN/Rossetti Devo Cycling Team), who sits in second. Lachance moved up one spot in the standings into second place after finishing second in the scratch race and the Madison and eighth in the points race to collect 27 points. Lachance's Madison partner, Emile Abraham (Atlanta, Ga./Rossetti Devo Cycling Team) is the new third-place rider after he registered 32 points in Washington to boost his total to 54. Abraham racked up 32 points after placing second in the Madison and points race as well as finishing fourth in the scratch race. The top two riders after the U.S. Sprint Grand Prix has dropped into the fourth and fifth positions after not competing in the Marymoor Grand Prix. Zack Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) sits in fourth place with 40 points while Franco Marvulli (SUI) rounds out the top five, three points behind Carlson.

WOMEN
Despite not competing in the Marymoor Grand Prix, the top three women maintain their positions in the NTC women's endurance standings. Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/FCS-Rouse: p/b Mr. Restore) holds the top spot with 71 points, while Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Exergy Twenty12) maintains second place with 42 points. Six points behind Higgins, in third place is Suzie Goodwin (McKinney, Texas/Crest-Richardson Bike Mart Cycling). Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/Helens-Cannondale) climbed up one spot from fifth into fourth place after she picked up eight points in the standings in Washington, bringing her season total to 34 points. Cindi Vargas (Humble, Texas/Matrix-Richardson Bike Mart) slipped from fourth into fifth place with 28 points.

SPRINT

WOMEN
Tela Crane (Sammamish, Wash./Broadmark Capital) racked up 54 standings points in her home state of Washington and now has 116 total points and holds a 59-point cushion atop the NTC women's sprint standings. Crane won the sprint and team sprint and placed second in the time trial and keirin. Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./enCompass Racing) remains in second place with 57 points, five points ahead of Cristin Walker (Houston, Texas/Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic). Walker posted all of her 52 points in Washington after winning the team sprint (with Crane) and time trial, placing second in the sprint and third in the keirin. Walker holds a seven-point edge on Missy Erickson (Cypress, Calif./Home Depot Center), who recorded all of her 45 points at the event in Washington. Erickson won the keirin and placed third in the time trial, sprint and team sprint. Erickson's partner in the team sprint, Erin Glover (Portland, Ore./Bike Central), rounds out the top five, nine points behind Erickson. Glover added a sixth-place result in the time trial to her team sprint result.

MEN
The NTC men's sprint standings have been reshuffled after the Marymoor Grand Prix. Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion) won each of the three events he contested to rack up 45 points and move from fourth place into the top spot with 81 points. Massie won the sprint, keirin and teamed with Danny Robertson (Rolling Meadows, Ill./WDT-Allvoi International Cycling Team) to win the team sprint. Robertson moved up one spot in the standings into second after he accumulated 31 points points in Washington. Robertson trails Massie by 14 points and leads the third-place rider T.J. Mathieson (Redondo Beach, Calif./Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic) by 11 points. Mathieson doubled his season total when he added 28 points to move into third place. The NTC men's sprint standings leader after the U.S. Grand Prix of Sprinting, Jonathan Fraley (Menomonee Falls, Wisc./WDT-Allvoi International Cycling Team), slipped into fourth place with 50 points, six points out of third and only one points ahead of the new fifth-place rider Kevin Mansker (Long Beach, Calif./Project London 2012). Mansker accrued 25 points after winning the kilo and finishing third in the keirin.

Only three events remain on the NTC, so riders will be drilling it to reach the top spots. The calendar resumes on Aug. 18-19 at the new Giordana Velodrome in Rock Hill, S.C. with the Giordana Velodrome Grand Prix. The calendar's penultimate event, the Madison Cup, is Aug. 31 at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center in Trexlertown, Pa., before the finale at the Velo Sports Center in Carson, Calif., the Velo Sports Center Grand Prix on Sept. 22-23.
