NRC: Wiles and Rosskopf take early NRC leads after Redlands Classic
The USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC) kicked off April 2-6 with the 30th annual Redlands Classic stage race in California.
Tayler Wiles (Fairfax, Calif./Specialized-lululemon) rode her way into the top spot in the NRC women's standings after winning the overall GC in Redlands. Going into the fifth and final stage road race, Leah Kirchmann (CAN/Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) was leading the women's GC with two stage wins under her belt. However, Kirchmann finished seventh on the stage while Wiles, who had a pair of third-place finishes from stages two and three, cruised across the finish line in second place behind stage winner Mara Abbott (Boulder, Colo./UnitedHealthcare). The effort was enough to move her ahead of Kirchmann in the GC and in the NRC standings. Wiles leads the standings with 240 points compared to Kirchmann's 234 and third-ranked Abbott's 180. Rounding out the top five are Karol-Ann Canuel (CAN/Specialized-lululemon) with 134 points and Flavia Oliveira (BRA/Firefighters Racing) with 110.
On the men's side of competition, Joseph Rosskopf (Athens, Ga./Hincapie Sportswear Development) outsprinted James Oram (Santa Rosa, Calif./Bissell Development Team) in the stage five road race to launch himself into the number one spot in the GC as well as in the men's NRC standings. The leader amassed 230 points during the Redlands competition compared to the 190 collected so far by second-ranked Oram. Ranked third on the NRC standings is Travis McCabe (Tucson, Ariz./Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis) who won stage three and collected 154 points over the five days. Rounding out the top five in the NRC are Redlands stage two winner Thomas Zirbel (Boulder, Colo./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) with 144 points and stage one winner Dion Smith (NZL/MRI Endurance p/b Monster Media) with 120 points.
In the men's team standings, Hincapie Sportswear Development Team took the early lead with 430 points compared to the 254 points of second-ranked Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies. In the women's team standings, Specialized lululemon is on top with 382 points while UnitedHealthcare is in second with 364 points.
