NRC & NCC competitors dash through Winston-Salem

Print Both the 2014 National Racing Calendar (NRC) and the National Criterium Calendar (NCC) went through North Carolina last week for the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic. Travis McCabe’s (Tuscon, Ariz./Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis) win in the NRC event and subsequent climb to the top spot of the men’s standings highlighted the two days of competition.
Winston-Salem Cycling Classic (NRC)
Racing kicked off on Friday, April 19, with the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic road race, a UCI 1.2 classified event. McCabe’s victory ahead of Joe Lewis (Greenville, S.C./Hincapie Sportswear Development Team) and teammate Zachary Bell (Canada/Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis) propelled him to first in the men’s NRC standings. He is now 124 points ahead of Redlands Classic overall winner Joseph Rosskopf (Athens, Ga./Hincapie Sportswear Development Team). Lewis, currently ranked fifth at 184 points behind McCabe, is a new addition to the NRC men’s top five.
The women’s race was won by 2012 Olympian Shelley Olds (Gilroy, Calif./Ale Cipollini), who outsprinted Joelle Numainville (Canada/Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Eugenia Bujak (Poland/BTC City Ljubljana) to the line. With the victory, Olds vaulted to fourth in the women’s NRC standings, just 40 points behind current leader Tayler Wiles (Fairfax, Calif./Specialized-lululemon). Numainville sits in sixth, just four points behind fifth-ranked Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team Tibco/To the Top).
The team standings saw a bit of a shake-up as well. Team SmartStop p/b Mountain Khakis moved into second on the men’s side, 194 points behind Hincapie Sportswear Development Team. In the women’s rankings, Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies now holds the top spot by just six points ahead of UnitedHealthcare.

Winston-Salem Cycling Classic Criterium (NCC)
On Saturday, riders took to the streets of downtown Winston-Salem for the criterium. Elena Cecchini (Italy/Estado de Mexico Faren) shocked the field by taking the win. Joanne Kiesanowski (New Zealand/ Team Tibco/To the Top) was the runner-up and reigning pro criterium national champion Alison Powers (Pinecliffe, Colo./UnitedHealthCare) finished third. Powers is now tied for second at 195 points in the women’s NCC standings with Erica Allar (Tucson, Ariz./Colavita-Fine Cooking), who finished fifth in Winston-Salem. The two are only 10 points behind standings leader Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./UnitedHealthcare).
Belgian Brecht Dhaene (Astellas Cycling Team) rode to victory in the men’s race ahead of Luke Keough (Sandwich, Mass./UnitedHealthcare) and Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif./Athlete Octane Cycling). Dhaene’s rise to fifth in the men’s NCC standings is the only change to the top five, which is still led by Carlos Alzate (Colombia/UnitedHealthcare).
Dhaene’s Astellas Cycling Team also makes its debut in the NCC men’s team standings at fourth. UnitedHealthcare continues to hold the top spot in both the men’s and women’s rankings.
