NRC: Abbott, Brenes assemble calendar leads in opening month

  
  


(May 5, 2015) – With the April 8-12 Redlands Bicycle Classic, April 23-26 Joe Martin Stage Race and April 29-May 3 Tour of the Gila in the books, Gregory Brenes (Northvale, N.J./Jamis Hagens Berman p/b Sutter) and Mara Abbott (Boulder, Colo./Wiggle-Honda) hold the men’s and women’s National Racing Calendar (NRC) standings leads, while Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies clings to the men’s team standings top spot and UnitedHealthcare leads the way in the women’s team standings.
 
WOMEN’S

Abbott’s start to the 2015 NRC has been nearly perfect, collecting GC wins at the Redlands Classic and Tour of the Gila for a total of 570 points for first place. Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-SVB) used ITT wins at Joe Martin and Tour of the Gila to earn respective first- and third-place GC finishes for 444 points and second overall, while Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./FCS Cycling-Visit Dallas Cycling p/b Noise4Good) earned respective silver and bronze medals at the Redlands and Joe Martin GCs to pick up 334 points. UnitedHealthcare teammates Katie Hall (Oakland, Calif./UnitedHealthcare) and Scotti Wilborne (Little Rock, Ark./UnitedHealthcare) stand fourth and fifth with 324 and 268 points.

MEN’S
 
Brenes led off his 2015 NRC campaign with a sizzling start, earning wins at the April 12 Redlands Classic GC and Joe Martin Stage Race ITT, and added a GC silver medal at Joe Martin and a fourth-place finish at the Redlands GC to total 344 points. John Murphy (Horse Shoe, N.C./UnitedHealthcare) picked up a second-place 330 points, all of which came at the Joe Martin Stage Race, claiming road race and GC wins and a third-place result at the criterium. Gavin Mannion (Austin, Texas/Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis) collected 304 points with three podium appearances—Redlands classic GC silver and April 10 road race bronze, as well as bronze in the Tour of the Gila GC. Robinson Chalapud (COL/Orgullo Antioqueno) used a bronze medal effort in the Joe Martin GC and ITT silver to collect 282 points for fourth, and Phillip Gaimon’s (Tucker, Ga./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) GC win at Redlands helped him to a fifth-place 272 points.
 
TEAMS
 
Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies has a slight edge on Jamis Hagens Berman p/b Sutter after the first three events, holding a 726 to 712 point advantage. UnitedHealthcare stands third with 464 points, followed closely by Hincapie Racing Team with 444 points. Team Smartstop Pro Cycling stands fifth after collecting 392 points.
 
Things aren’t as tight atop the women’s standings, as UnitedHealthcare is off to a quick start with 1244 points, followed by Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies in second with 950 points, Visit Dallas Cycling p/b Noise4Good in third with 676 points, Team TIBCO-SVB in fourth with 502 points and TWENTY16 p/b SHO-AIR in fifth with 480 points.
