Personal

As a kid in the state of Washington, Stephen Ettinger often could be found riding his bike alongside his father, Tom Ettinger. At approximately 10 years of age, Ettinger and a close friend began to race their bike. Unable to race anywhere other than on mountains, Ettinger's racing career began on soil while traversing roots and navigating trees.

As proficient as he is on two wheels, Ettinger was equally talented on two skis. He grew up nordic skiing for the Pacific Northwest Ski Association and was ready to pursue it on the collegiate level at Montana State University. He maintained his love of bike racing and earned a spot on the team representing the United States of America at the 2007 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in West Dover, Vt. on Mount Snow. He placed fourth in the junior 17-18 race and hasn't looked back.

In 2011, Ettinger truly came into his own, emerging among elite mountain bike racers in several events. In addition to registering a pair of top-10 finishes at UCI Mountain Bike World Cups, Ettinger's season climaxed in July when he bested the under-23 field at the 2011 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross-Country National Championships in Ketchum, Idaho, by three minutes to secure the national title. His performance in Idaho earned him a spot on the team representing the United States at the 2011 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Champery, Switzerland. Ettinger was also selected to represent his country at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he placed 13th. His season culminated with being named USA Cycling's Male Athlete of the Year.

"The biggest moment in my career, so far, was winning the U23 National Championships this year," Ettinger said. "In fact the entire 2011 season has been a highlight in itself, I was incredibly successful on the World Cup and moved into the elite ranks domestically. The success is representative of a lot of hard over the years. Definitely making the Worlds team in 2007 was a highlight and solidified that I wanted to try to make a mark in this sport."

Ettinger credits many people surrounding him for his cycling success. "My coach Jason Jablonski has been incredible. He has always believed that I can go as far in this sport as I so choose, but has never put overwhelming pressure on me. Its always been about having fun. (USA Cycling's Mountain Bike and Cyclo-cross Program Director) Marc Gullickson took me over to Europe and showed me how hard this sport is, and demonstrated what it was going to take to reach the top. He has a vision for cycling talent in America, and has shown us that we can believe in and achieve that vision for ourselves. Finally I absolutely wouldn't be here without the support of my parents. They have always believed in what I do, and given me the opportunity to pursue my dreams."
