American BMXers primed for Olympic Test Event

Print Less than one year ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, nearly 160 elite BMX riders, and more than two dozen Americans, will gather in London for the official BMX Olympic Test Event, also the third stop of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series. The first opportunity for the riders to race the Olympic track ahead of next summer’s Games begins this Friday, Aug. 19, with finals on Saturday, Aug. 20.
The final will be broadcast nationwide on NBC on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Ranked 12 and 14 in the Suprecross series, Nic Long (Lakeside, Calif./Haro-Rockstar) and David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Intense BMX) will lead the U.S. men’s contingent which is on the hunt for a medal after coming up empty at the recent world championships in Copenhagen.
Veteran Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) will lead the American ladies as she is ranked inside the top 10 halfway through the four-race series. She’ll be joined by former soccer player turned BMX star Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla./Endeavor-Rip XX Racing) and recent world championship bronze medalist in the junior elite division Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro-Rockstar) in headlining the U.S. women’s squad.
In total 120 Elite men and 40 Elite women have singed up for this ultimate Olympic test. For more information visit the London Prepares Series’ official webpage.
About the Olympic BMX Track
Located in the north of the Olympic Park in Stratford in east London, the new BMX Track is approximately 450-meters long and features an eight-meter high ramp at the start, followed by jumps, bumps and tightly banked corners. For the first time ever the track features the ‘Oakley Underground,’ a 15-meter long tunnel, part of the women’s second straight and the ‘Red Bull Box Jump’, a challenging and technical feature where elite men fly on a box and off again. The BMX Track will host both the men’s and women’s Olympic BMX competitions next summer, with a total of 48 riders competing for two gold medals.
