Sixteen American cyclists named to Pan Am Games squad
USA Cycling announced today its nominees to the 2011 United States Pan American Games Team. Sixteen athletes have accepted their nominations and are expected to represent the United States in Guadalajara, Mexico, Oct. 14-30.
The United States will compete in all Olympic disciplines of cycling – road, track, mountain bike and BMX – with a mixture of accomplished veterans and young talent.
In the mountain bike competition, veteran Jeremiah Bishop (Harrisonburg, Va./Cannondale Factory Racing), just off a fourth-place finish at the Olympic Mountain Bike Test Event, will team up with U23 national champion Stephen Ettinger (Cashmere, Wash./BMC MTB Development Team) to tackle the Pan Am Mountain Bike Circuit near Tapala, Mexico on July 15. Along with Bishop on the men’s side, Heather Irmiger (Boulder, Colo/Subaru-Trek) is an automatic qualifier to the women’s squad by virtue of her silver medal performance at the Continental Mountain Bike Championships in Bogota last spring.
On the road the U.S. qualified only one spot in the women’s road race and two in the time trial. Elite road race national champion Robin Farina (Charlotte, N.C./NOW and Novartis) will contest the road race and will be joined by Alison Starnes(Mill Valley, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12) for the time trial.
As the top-ranked women in USA Cycling’s BMX Power Rankings, Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) is the only automatic qualifier to the BMX squad. Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla./Paul Williams) will join her for the women’s event, while Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) and Nic Long (Lakeside, Calif./ Haro- Rockstar) will race the men’s event.
Seven athletes will contest the track for the U.S. team, Oct. 17-20. Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12), the lone endurance rider, is set to contest the omnium after a strong performance at the world championships earlier this year. Dean Tracy (Portland, Ore./Project 2012), Michael Blatchford (Cypress, Calif./Project 2012) and Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, Calif./OUCH Pro Cycling) who took silver at the Continental Championships last spring in Bogata, will again team up for the team sprint. Blatchford and Walker will also contest the individual sprint. Elizabeth Carlson (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Black Dog Professional Cycling) and Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./EnCompass Racing) will race the team sprint on the women’s side and Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa./CPT-Home Depot Center) is set to compete in both the women’s sprint and keirin.
All nominees are subject to approval by the United States Olympic Committee Board of Directors.
