Another golden day for the USA at BMX Worlds

Print The United States was again the most medal winning nation on day two of competition at the 2011 UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. Felicia Stancil collected her eighth world title at only age 16!
American riders Sean Gaian (Santee, Calif.), Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill.), Stephen Larralde (Riverside, Calif.) and Matt Pohlkamp (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored the four American medals, all in the form of gold, in the older junior and masters categories on Thursday. Those four combined with yesterday’s seven-gold medal performances bring the U.S. total to 11; more than any other nation.
Stancil secured her eighth world title at only age 16 dominating that division on the women’s side. Shayona Glynn (Norco, Calif.) just missed sharing the podium with the Illinois superstar, finishing sixth. In the 15 year-old boys division Sean Gaian (Santee, Calif.) edged Denmark’s Chris Tetche Christensen to earn his rainbow stripes. Meghan Matthews (Manteca, Calif.) nearly added to the U.S medal total but had to settle for fourth in the 17 girls event.
For the masters Stephen Larralde (Riverside, Calif.) earned the first title of these world championshps with a win in the 30 & over division. BMX legend Matt Pohlkamp (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the masters open division with ease ahead of Luciano Javier Colombo of Argentina. Jason Carnes (Austin, Texas), who was a spirited fan in Wednesday’s junior competitions, earned a sixth place finish for himself today.
With amateur class competitions complete, attention will now turn to the junior elite and elite superstars as begin their quest for the title of world champion on Friday. Much to the delight of the Copenhagen crowd, following today’s racing the world’s top male and female riders took to the track from some training before tomorrow’s time trial qualifications and Time Trial Super Finals.

In all 2,200 BMX-riders from 38 countries are racing for gold in 44 challenge classes and four elite classes over five days of competition in Copenhagen.
