Print Sixteen Americans advance to finals at round 2 of Supercross World Cup
Papandal, Netherlands (May 27, 2011) --The second stop of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup got underway on Friday with sixteen Americans (including five from USA Cycling’s funded team) placing high enough in the day’s time trials to advance to Saturday’s finals.
The five USA Cycling riders that earned spots in the men’s and women’s finals for Saturday are Corben Sharrah (Tucson, Ariz./GT Bicycles), David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Intense BMX), Josh Meyers (Treasure Island, Fla./Ssquared-Answer), Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro-Rockstar), and Arielle Martin (Spanaway, Wash/Intense BMX).
The USA Cycling-funded team riders will be joined by 11 other Americans in Saturday’s finals, including Nicholas Long (Lakeside, Calif.), Mike Day (Santa Clarita, Calif./GT-Red Bull), Tyler Faoro (Coral Springs, Fla./Madera BMX), Jason Rogers (Mesquite, Texas), Donny Robinson (Napa, Calif./Hyper Bicycles), Tyler Brown (San Clemente, Calif.), Corey Reid (Phoenix, Arix./Speedline-Supercross), Alex Anthony (Saugus, Calif./Rennen-Speed), Amanda Carr (Punta Gorda, Fla./Endeavor-Rip XX Racing), Danielle George (Palmdale, Calif.), and Ashley Verhagen (Simi Valley, Calif./Crupi-Pro Gate).
In addition to the time trial that qualified riders for the final, the Superfinal Time Trials were held on Friday. The top 32 men and top 16 women from the first time trial earned the right to compete in the Superfinal, with the top American results being a pair of fifth-place finishes for Corben Sharrah and Arielle Martin. Amanda Carr was ninth while Brooke Crain was 13th.
The weekend’s event is taking place on the brand new Supercross track in Papendal, a near replica of the Olympic track in London.
"It's big and it's good. It's the kind of technical track that I like. For the progression of the sport, this track is really good because it's so difficult. It must be really nice for the audience to watch us on this track,” said Corben Sharrah (the American winner of the first stop on this year’s Supercross circuit). "I feel really good and comfortable about the track. It suits my style, which is calm and effortless.”
