Omniums and scratch race highlight penultimate day at Track Worlds

Print Jennie Reed (Seattle, Wash./OUCH) finished 15th in the scratch race and Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling p/b ProairHFA) 20th in the men’s omnium for the United States on the penultimate day of competition at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. With a gold and silver already on the week, Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./OUCH) also put herself in strong medal position halfway through the women’s omnium.

After grabbing the silver at the Manchester World Cup, Reed held yet another medal opportunity for the U.S. in the 10-kilometer women’s scratch. The aggressive race however did not favor the former keirin world champion. Marianne Vos (NED) led multiple attacks before finally getting away with around 10 laps remaining. Four ladies were able to follow the former road and cyclo-cross world champion, sewing up the top five spots. Much to the delight of the home crowd Vos then pushed across the line for the win, giving the Dutch team its first medal of the competition.
“I knew my chances were better in a sprint,” stated Reed, who won a silver in the women’s team pursuit earlier in the week. “My goal was simply to stay in good position. I was keeping my eye on a couple of key sprinters and if they were in the pack I wasn’t going to go up the road. I was betting all my chances for it to come down to a field sprint and it didn’t. After the team pursuit this would have just been icing on the cake.”
Men’s Omnium
Bobby Lea(Mertztown, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling p/b ProairHFA) wrapped up his omnium competition in 20th place overall after three long days of competition, including Wednesday’s scratch race. After finishing eighth in the 2008 omnium world championship, the veteran endurance rider finished 18th in the individual pursuit and the time trial and did not finish the omnium scratch race.
“It was a long couple of days for me and it wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for,” explained Lea. “I had a good winter and I was looking to come back on to the track and figure out what this event was all about. I was hoping to do better but it’s a small hurdle and not the end of the world.”

Women’s Omnium
Despite already contesting two events here in Apeldoorn, Hammer came out strong with a sixth-place finish in the morning’s flying lap.
The four-time pursuit world champion was quite obviously a marked woman in the omnium points race with every move covered in the early going. Hammer was able to snag three sprint points late in the race, but only enough for 11th place.
After controlling the front of much of the evening’s elimination race, Hammer was snipped at the line with five riders remaining. The elimination race, often referred to as the miss-in-out is a newly implemented omnium event where the last rider to cross the line every other lap is awarded the lowest available place. Hammer placed fifth.
With two medals already in hand this week, halfway through the omnium Hammer put herself in good position to potentially bring home a third. She is fourth place in the ominum standings heading into Sunday’s final three events: individual pursuit, scratch race and 500-meter time trial.
Coming Up
The women’s omnium competition will wrap-up the 2011 UCI Track World Championships for the United States on Sunday with Hammer aiming for her third medal of the week.
