USA Cycling announces recipients of 2010 Club of the Year awards
Colorado Springs, Colo. (December 20, 2010) – USA Cycling is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2010 “Club of the Year” awards. The eight clubs that are recognized for outstanding programs throughout the 2010 season will receive complimentary renewal fees for 2011.
Clubs were judged on several key areas including race promotion, membership composition, instructional clinics and seminars, club activities, charitable contributions, and racing performance.
Three clubs were recognized with “Overall Club of the Year” awards based on their membership size. (Division I = 76+ members, Division II = 30-75 members, and Division III = 1-29 members) In addition, five more special awards were bestowed upon clubs in the following categories: Masters, Juniors, Collegiate, New Club, and Track Club.
Taking the top honor, as “Overall Club of the Year” in Division I is XXX Racing-AthletiCo out of Chicago. Boasting 208 members, XXX is known for introducing new people to the sport of cycling through efforts like its weekly no-drop group rides. The club hosted four events in 2010, including a new two-person cyclo-cross relay which attracted 350 participants in its first year. XXX also hosted 18 clinics or coaching events, including three destination camps like the “Live like a Euro Pro” camp in Tuscany, Italy. For more on this club, click here to visit its website.
Another Chicago-based club was on the winners list this year, with Half Acre Cycling be crowned “Overall Club of the Year” in Division II. In addition to providing four events for Chicago-area racers to participate in this season, Half Acre does its part to support women in cycling. In 2010, the club organized two Ladies Dirt Rides, a “Ladies Fix a Bike” workshop, and several women-specific clinics. For more on this club, click here.
Thirty-one members strong, Team Specialized Racing, out of Fremont, Calif., won the “Overall Club of the Year” award in Division III. With a highly accomplished roster of masters, the club also has a very strong junior component with 14 of the club’s 31 members being juniors. Winning the “Masters Club of the Year” designation was the Cross Creek Cycling Club out of Fayetteville, N.C. The club has over 130 members and a strong focus on charitable causes. Having hosted two Wounded Warrior events in 2010, the club puts a lot of effort into its cycling rehabilitation program for wounded veterans. With its motto being to have fun while learning to be competitive so that juniors will continue to enjoy the sport, Red Zone Cycling took the “Junior Club of the Year” designation for the third year in a row. The Louisville, Ky.-club hosts a myriad of activities throughout the year, including development activities across road, mountain bike, and cyclo-cross racing. Taking the “Collegiate Club of the Year” honor was Mars Hill Cycling. The North Carolina school has only 1,200 students, yet the cycling team managed to recruit 21 racers in what was only its second year as a varsity sport. Host of the 2010 South Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Road Championships, as well as a November ‘cross event, Mars Hill has proven that it knows how to put on a quality event. Not only that, but the team is a perfect example of how a very small school can create a successful cycling scholarship program, even during a recession. Another North Carolina group, Full Spectrum Racing was awarded with the “Best New Club of the Year” honors. The new club aims to create a nurturing environment for new riders while also helping more experienced riders advance in their careers. In its first year, the club hosted a cyclo-cross race with 200 race starts, boasted multiple podium finishes, upgraded four riders, licensed five new members, and hosted various clinics, group rides, and charitable club activities.
Chicago-based Bouledogue Tout Noir has been named the 2010 “Best Track Club of the Year.” The club’s name translates to “All-black Bulldog” to reflect the tenacity and interests of its riders who continuously place on the podium at local, regional, and national events. In addition to an introductory Madison clinic at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, the club hosted the “Sprinter’s Dream Omnium Series” in May and June. “All-black Bulldog” also reserves space on its jerseys for support of non-profit organizations.
