Elite Track Nationals conclude with Madisons and Team Sprints
October 3, 2010 (Carson, Calif.) – The 2010 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships concluded on Sunday with four final national titles being awarded in the Men’s and Women’s Madison and Team Sprint competitions.
After debuting as an exhibition event in 2009, the women’s Madison became a national championship event for 2010 with the very first women’s Madison national title awarded to the powerful Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12 sprinting duo of Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12) and Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash./Gregg’s Cycles).
The pair worked together with Lake Washington Velo’s Valerie Brostrom and Jennifer Triplett(Seattle, Wash./Broadmark Capitol Cycling) and the Cycle Loft Track Team duo of Kacey Manderfield and Colleen Hayduk to lap the field about half way through the 100 laps before winning the event.
“Jennie and I both know that we’ve got to sprint, so that’s our advantage over the other girls,” Higgins explained from the infield. “We knew if we didn’t let anyone lap the field that we had the advantage of the sprint.”
“It’s awesome that we have this event. It’s growing internationally for the women,” Higgins went on about what it was like to win the very first women’s Madison national title. “It’s quite an honor and even a bigger honor to be able to race it with Jennie Reed.”

Lake Washington Velo earned the silver medal while Cycle Loft Track Team took the bronze. Riding to the fourth and fifth place finishes were the Mixin it Up squad of Hanan Alves-Hyde (Oakland, Calif.) and Elspeth Huyett (Alburtis, Pa.) and the Vanderkittin Racing duo of Kate Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Jennifer Reither (Scotts Valley, Calif.).
In the men’s Madison, the Racelab U-23 Cycling Team’s Danny Heeley (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif.) lapped the field once and won the last sprint to earn the national title ahead of Ouch 2’s Iggy Silva (San Diego, Calif.) and Cody O’Reilly (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Giddy Up Factor 5000’s Shane Kline (Bally, Pa.) and Jame Carney (Tucson, Ariz.). The Lionoflannders.com pair of Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa.) and John Simes (Breinigsville, Pa.) placed fourth while the NOW-UHC duo of Eric Barlevav (Northridge, Calif.) and Kit Karzen (Beverly Hills, Calif.) rounded out the podium in fifth.
Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12) rode her way into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey a second time on Sunday when she teamed up with Elizabeth Carlson (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) to earn the national title in the women’s team sprint. They duo beat out Broadmark Momentum squad Tela Crane (Seattle, Wash.) and Cristin Walker (Houston, Texas) in the gold medal final. Winning the bronze medal race was the Brian’s House of Pain duo of Amelia Bjesse Puffin (Portland, Ore.) and Anissa Cobb (Portland, Ore.) who bested Home Depot Center Team Kate Wilson and Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa.). Riding for the Eaton-Maglaty squad, Dena Eaton (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Alissa Maglaty (Piedmont, Calif.) grabbed the podium’s final step.
The Pure Energy squad of Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion), Andy Lakatsoh (Trexlertown, Pa.), David Espinoza (Breinigsville, Pa.), and Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, Calif.) took the final national title of the weekend, besting the Momentum Coaching Group team of Daniel Walker (Houston, Texas), Kevin Mansker (Long Beach, Calif.), TJ Mathieson (Redondo Beach, Calif.), and Dean Tracy (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the gold medal final of the men’s team sprint. Affinity Cycles duo Colin Prensky (New York, NY) and Jon Linchitz (Glen Cove, NY) won the bronze medal round against Masters of the Universe riders Jonathan Fraley (Bayview, Wis.), Joshua Ryan (Chicago, Ill.), Allen Vugrincic (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Peter Billington (San Rafael, Calif.). The Fire ‘n Ice threesome of J. Christopher Ferris (Wayzata, NM), Alexander Gil (Hialeah, Fla.), and Phillip Elbaz (Miami Beach, Fla.) grabbed the podium’s fifth step.
With the conclusion of Sunday’s racing, the 2010 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships are officially in the books.
