Four more titles awarded on penultimate day of Elite Track Nationals
October 2, 2010 (Carson, Calif.) – The penultimate day of the 2010 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships was packed full of action as four more national champions were crowned at the Home Depot Center Velodrome in suburban Los Angeles.
Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Chester County Cycling) is the reigning junior national champ in the keirin, not to mention a 2010 world championship bronze medalist. On Saturday, the 17-year-old added an elite national title to his hardware collection. He did so by beating out defending elite national champ Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion) in a thrilling kierin final.
“It’s just amazing because this was not expected at all,” Baranoski said just before slipping into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. “I was really just kind of aiming to make the final. If I did that, I was happy. So any kind of medal is icing on the cake for me. The jersey is just phenomenal.”

Massie grabbed the silver medal this time around while Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, Calif./Momentum Cycling) took the podium’s third step. Andy Lakatosh (Trexlertown, Pa./Chester County Cycling) and David Espinoza (Breinigsville, Pa./Affinity Cycles) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

Photo by Mitch FriedmanIn the men’s 30-kilometer points race, Daniel Holt (Royal Oak, Mich./Team Type 1) and Shane Kline (Bally, Pa./Bissell Pro Cycling Team) lapped the field once. Holt also won two of the 12 sprints to garner a total of 30 points for the national title. Kline earned 20 points for the silver medal while Cody O’Reilly (Santa Barbara, Calif./Bissell Pro Cycling Team) rode to the bronze with 17 points. Zak Kovalcik (Portland, Ore.) and Austin Carroll (Orange, Calif./Adageo Energy) were fourth and fifth in the 120-lap contest.
The women’s points race saw Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12 teammates Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo.) and Hanan Alves-Hyde (Oakland, Calif.) dominate the 25-kilometer, 100-lap competition to take first and second respectively.
“We just wanted the top of the podium no matter who it was,” Higgins explained afterwards. “We had great teamwork as far as just reading each other, racing against each other but with each other.”
Higgins won three of the ten sprints and crossed the finish line first to accumulate 23 points for the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. Alves-Hyde was second with 19 points.
“It was actually a fun race because it was really active,” Higgins said of the attack-filled contest. “People who knew theycouldn’t outsprint myself and others were definitely putting in big efforts to get away. It made us sprinter-types work a lot harder to make sure they didn’t stay away.”
Kimberly Giest (Emmaus, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation) found herself on the podium a second time in as many days with the bronze medal while Elizabeth Newell (Oakland, Calif./Bell Lap Racing) andMegan Hottman (Golden, Colo./Defined Fitness Training) rode onto the podium’s fourth and fifth steps.
The final competition of Saturday evening was the women’s sprint in which 21-year-old Dana Fiess (Telford, Pa./Home Depot Center Team) took her second career elite national title. (Her first came on Friday with her win in the keirin.)
After qualifying in second place, she beat out Cristin Walker (Houston, Texas/Momentum Coaching Group) in the gold medal round. Elizabeth Carlson (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Classic Cycling Essentials) bested Jen Featheringill (Portland, Ore./Bike Central) for the bronze medal while Tela Crane (Seattle, Wash./Lake Washington Velo) won the race for fifth.
The 2010 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships will conclude on Sunday with the men’s and women’s team sprint and Madison competitions.
