Elite Track Nationals crown six more national champs on Friday

Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash./Gregg’s Cycles) rode to a national title in the women’s scratch race. The 2008 world champion in the keirin, Reed beat out silver and bronze medalists Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa./Verducci Breakaway Racing) and Jennifer Triplett (Seattle, Wash./Broadmark Capitol Cycling) in a bunch sprint at the finish.
“There were a couple of girls who tried a couple things, but I think it was hard to get away because there were a lot of sprinters in the field,” Reed explained after the race. “So it ended up coming down to the bunch race. Usually when it comes down to that, I think I can come out on top.”
Reed, who is making her transition from sprint events to endurance racing, said she came to the national championships to test her fitness and has enjoyed racing with a lot of women she’s never raced against before.
“Thanks to Gregg’s Cycle in Seattle,” she said. “They helped me get out here. It’s been great to have the hometown support again after all these years.”
Crossing the finish line for the final two podium spots in the women’s scratch race were Erica Allar (Fogelsville, Pa./Salamander Racing) and Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/ Sugar Cycles Factory Racing).
Like the women’s event, the men’s scratch race also came down to the bunch sprint which was won by Jame Carney (Tucson, Ariz.). Taking the silver and bronze medals were Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./The Sports Team) and John Simes (Breinigsville, Pa./ Jamis-Sutter Home presented by Colavita) while Ryan Luttrell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Black Dog Pro Cycling) and Zak Kovalcik (Portland, Ore.) were fourth and fifth.
In the final of the women’s keirin, 21-year-old Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa./Home Depot Center Team) took her very first national title, beating out five other women including defending champ Christin Walker (Houston, Texas/Momentum Coaching Group).
“I had a lot of experience racing this summer,” Feiss said after slipping into the national champion’s jersey. “Got to the line and said, ‘Alright, I know what I have to do. Let’s get it done,’ and I rode my race just how I knew I could and it worked out really well.”

Riding to the silver medal was Anissa Cobb (Portland, Ore./River City Racing) while Elizabeth Carlson (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Classic Cycling Essentials) grabbed the bronze. Cristin Walker and Jen Featheringill (Portland, Ore./Bike Central) closed out the women’s keirin podium in fourth and fifth.
Next up were the men’s and women’s individual pursuits. Following a successful showing at the USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships earlier this month, Adam Leibovitz (Indianapolis, Ind./Marian Unviersity) is continuing his winning ways. He rode to a gold medal in the men’s pursuit on Friday evening ahead of silver medalist Daniel Harm (Southworth, Wash./Lake Washington Velo) while
Roman Kilun (Berkeley, Calif./United Healthcare) posted the bronze medal time ahead of Chris Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix Cycling Club). David Swanson (Tucson, Ariz./Summit Velo) rounded out the podium in fifth.
In the women’s pursuit, it was Kimberly Geist (Emmaus, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation-Team Alliance Environmental) to ride her way into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey. She beat out second-place finisher Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12). Elizabeth Newell (Oakland, Calif./Bell Lap Racing) took the bronze ahead of Megan Hottman (Golden, Colo./Defined Fitness Training LLC) and Mackenzie Woodring (Belmont, Mich./U.S. National Paralympic Team) grabbed the podium’s final step.
The final event of the evening was the men’s sprint in which Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion) and Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, Calif./Momentum Cycling) went head to head in three final rounds with Massie taking the win. David Espinoza (Breinigsville, Pa./Afifnity Cycles) beat out Andy Lakatosh (Trexlertown, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation) in the bronze medal round while Kevin Mansker (Long Beach, Calif./Momentum Coaching Group) won the race for fifth.
Racing continues at the Home Depot Center Velodrome on Saturday with the men’s keirin, women’s sprint, and the men’s and women’s points races.
