Six national titles awarded on day two of Elite Track Nationals
September 30, 2010 (Carson, Calif.) – Six national titles were awarded on day two of the 2010 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships at the Home Depot Center Velodrome in Carson, Calif. Thursday’s competition saw national champs crowned in the men’s and women’s omniums, time trials, and team pursuits.
The omnium events, which began on Wednesday and wrapped up Thursday morning, could have been considered the Bobby Lea and Sarah Hammer show. Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Lionoflanders) won four of the six men’s events to take the national title while Hammer (Temecula, Calif./Ouch Pro Cycling) barely missed out on a sweep of the women’s events, claiming five victories and one second-place finish to earn the omnium title.
Hammer’s overall win came from dominating performances in the flying lap, points race, elimination race, individual pursuit, and scratch race, and her second-place effort in the 500-meter time trial that saw her bested by Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12).
“This (omnium) is what I’m focusing on for 2012,” Hammer commented after slipping into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. “It’s the beginning of the season for me… I had a little break this summer so I use nationals as a jump start… a wake-up call to get back into racing.”

Grabbing the silver and bronze medals in the women’s omnium were Cari Higgins and Jennifer Triplett (Seattle, Wash./Lake Washington Velo-Broadmark Capitol Cycling) while Hanan Alves-Hyde (Oakland, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY 12) and Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa./Verducci Breakaway Racing) finished the six-event competition in fourth and fifth places.

He placed sixth in the elimination race. On Thursday, he won the omnium kilometer-time trial and was seventh in the omnium scratch race, which was won by Kit Karzen (Beverly Hills, Calif./VRC-NOW-MS Society).
“It couldn’t have really gone any better for me,” Lea said after claiming victory in four of the six omnium events. “I wanted to do this omnium since it was the new format.”
“I’m looking forward to the Madison,” he went on. “But it’s going to be a tough race. There are a lot of strong guys here so we’ll see how it goes.”
Following Lea in the omnium standings was silver medalist Danny Heeley (Hermosa Beach, Calif./VRC-Now-MS Society) while Kit Karzen collected the bronze. Austin Carroll (Orange, Calif./Adageo Energy) and Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif./Racelab U23 Cycling Team) were fourth and fifth.
In addition to the completion of the omnium events, Thursday’s morning session crowned national champs in the men’s kilometer time trial and the women’s 500-meter time trial.
Riding onto the top step of the podium in the men’s time test was 2004 Olympian Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif./Bike Religion). The new national champ posted a time of 1:04.022 over the kilometer, compared to the 1:04.313 clocked by silver medalist David Espinoza (Breinigsville, Pa./Affinity Cycles) – 1:04.313. Peter Billington (San Rafael, Calif./LTO Velo) was the third fastest while Daniel Sullivan (Bloomfield, NJ/Affinity Cycles) and Adam Leibovitz (Indianapolis, Ind./Marian Univeristy) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.
In the women’s event, Liz Carlson (Jim Thorope, Pa./Classic Cycling Essentials) was victorious after covering the 500 meters with a time of 36.878, nearly two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa./CPT-Home Depot Center Team) who posted a 37.008. Christin Walker (Houston, Texas/Momentum Coaching Group) rode to the podium’s third step while Jen Featheringill (Portland, Ore./Bike Central) and Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo./Rocky Mounts-Izze Racing) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Photo by Mike GladuThe evening session featured the team pursuits in which the Ouch Pro Cycling Team squad won the men’s contest by beating out Black Dog Pro Cycling Team in the gold medal round. The Ouch contingent was made up of Brent Kay (Temecula, Calif.), Cody O’Reilly (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Daniel Harm (Southworth, Wash.), Austin Carroll (Orange, Calif.), and Roman Kilun (Berkeley, Calif.). With six laps go, they took the win by catching the Black Dog foursome of Kit Karzen (Beverly Hills, Calif.), Ryan Luttrell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Ryan Sabga (Denver, Colo.), and Adam Leibovitz (Indianapolis, Ind.). The bronze medal round was won by John Walsh (Playa del Rey, Calif.), Keith Ketterer (Camarillo, Calif.), Collin Berry (Huntington Beach, Calif.), and Kevin Phillips (Redondo Beach, Calif.).
In the women’s team pursuit, it came as no surprise that the Peanut Butter TWENTY 12 squad took the top step of the podium. Three trio of Hanan Alves-Hyde (Oakland, Calif.), Ruth Winder (Lafayette, Calif.), and Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo.) out rode Cali Girls Dena Eaton (Los Angeles, Calif.), Somersby Jenkins (Santa Barbara, Calif.), and Morgan Kapp (South Pasadena, Calif.) for the national title.
Winning the race for bronze was the Webcor Alto-Velo squad of Haley Juno-Galdes (Menlo Park, Calif.), Andi Smith (Menlo Park, Calif.), and Jane Wolcott (Menlo Park, Calif.)
Racing will continue at the Home Depot Center Velodrome on Friday with the morning session featuring the men’s and women’s scratch race finals.
** Please Note: There will be NO SCRATCH RACE HEATS for the WOMEN on Friday. **
Action will continue with a very busy evening session in which national titles will be awarded in the women’s keirin, men’s sprint, and the men’s and women’s individual pursuits.
