2011/2012 USA Cycling Pro Championships return to Greenville
Greenville, S.C. (Sept. 19, 2010) – USA Cycling is proud to announce the 2011 and 2012 USA Cycling Professional Championships have been awarded to Medalist Sports in partnership with the city/county of Greenville, S.C. The event will also be moved forward to Memorial Day weekend, in best accord with the international calendar.
“We’re pleased to be heading back to Greenville and Memorial weekend is the ideal time to do so,” stated USA Cycling Chief Executive Officer Steve Johnson. “After the 26th weekend of the year, no points are given toward UCI World ranking at national championships. It is important for American cycling to hold our Professional National Championship prior to the UCI deadline, especially heading into an Olympic year.”
The date change to Memorial Day weekend, specifically the individual time trial on Saturday, May 28 and the road race on Monday, May 30, 2011, will also allow for a greater field of riders; between the Amgen Tour of California and the TD Bank International Championships in Philadelphia. The holiday weekend will also allow the return of the three-day format, permitting a vital rest day for the riders.
The date change is not expected to impact the Tour of Somerville which will continue to be a vital part of USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar.
USA Cycling distributed a host request for proposal (RFP) nationally and though received several strong bids, is proud to continue its partnership with Medalist Sports in Greenville, S.C.
