Sprint and Points Race highlight Saturday Masters Track Nationals
Frisco, Texas (Sept. 4, 2010) — Nine new sprint and points race champions were awarded at the Superdrome in Frisco, Texas on Saturday as the 2010 edition of the Richardson Bike USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships prepared to wrap up. Overall 49 Stars-and-Stripes have been awarded through Saturday’s penultimate day of competition.
Some of most fierce competition of the week took place on Saturday with sprint and points race champions crowned in several of the event’s most contested divisions. After making their way through the heated preliminary rounds of the women’s 40-44 sprint, Suzanne Goodwin (Plano, TX/Frisco Cycling Club) squared off against Kimberly Edwards (Clinton, CT/Capital Velo Club) in the final. The second-seeded Goodwin was able to pick-off the top-seeded Edwards and add another Stars-and-Stripes to go with the time trial national title she won on Wednesday. In the 45-49 competition CJ Boyenger (Orange, CA/Team Hammer Nutrition) earned her first title of the week after qualifying first and holding off multi-time national champ Annette Williams (Kenmore, WA/Northwest Velo/First Rate Mortgage).
In the hotly contested 40-44 men’s sprint, Frisco, Texas local Nelson Li (Brauer-Mick Management) beat out the top qualifier, another Texan, Andrew Weathers (Houston, TX/Momentum Coaching Croup-Momentum Coaching Group). The pair, who typically compete at the USA Cycling Elite Track Nationals, ended atop the field that began with more than 20 riders. The day’s only male top-qualifier to come out on top of the sprint tournament, Kirk Whiteman (Portland, OR) beat out Matthew Diefenbach (Pottstown, PA/Chester County Cycling Foundation-Team Alliance Environmental) to earn the men’s 45-49 national title.
Interspersed between rounds of the sprint tourney, five points race national titles were also decided on Saturday. The men’s 30-34 division crowned Mike Zagorski (Honolulu, HI/BME Racing) in a small race of only five competitors. Jason Meidhof (Bethesda, MD/DC Velo Limited-Clean Currents p/b Don Beyer Volvo) out-raced silver-medalist Kevin Kremke (Houston, TX/Bike Barn) to add another jersey to hang with his time trial Stars-and-Stripes in the 35-39 category.
The hotly contested 50-54 men’s 20-kilometer points race saw Lawrence Nolan (Fremont, CA/Team Specialized Racing-Team Specialized Racing Masters) hold off surges by Mark Sommers (Washington, DC/DC Velo Limited-Clean Currents p/b Don Beyer Volvo) and Robert Black (Albrightsville, PA/Suburban Health Sports-Saroff Racing Team) to win the title over a nearly 20-rider field. In the 55-59 10-kilometer event, the Oklahoma State Road Race Champion Gary Ziegler (Tulsa, OK/Oklahoma City Velo Club) earned his first title here with L Scott Porter (Flower Mound, TX/North Texas Road Team) finishing a close second.
The day wrapped up with 60-year-old Larry Wolff (Sacramento, CA/Alto Velo Racing Club) winning his second jersey of the week over Richard DiGennaro (Albany, CA/Solo Velo/Clif Shot) in the 60-64 men’s points race event.
Sunday’s competition will continue crowning champions in the remaining divisions of the time trial as well as the team sprint, team pursuit and Madison contests. View the full schedule of events on-line.
