Fifteen national titles awarded at Masters Track Nationals Friday
Frisco, Texas (Sept. 3, 2010) — Fifteen more national titles were awarded on day three of the 2010 Richardson Bike Mart USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships. The Superdrome in Frisco, Texas played host to various time trial, points race and sprint national championship match-ups on Friday.
Daniel Casper (Northfield, MN/GrandStay Hotels) opened up the morning’s action with a 3:39.817 in the three-kilometer time trial. Casper’s time was just enough to edge Michael Miller (Birdsboro, PA/Chester County Cycling) and earn the Stars-and-Stripes in the tough 40-44 division. Chris Carlson (Plano, TX/Matrix Cycling Club) posted the day’s fastest time trial run (3:37.878) to comfortably win the 45-49 division. Brett Clare (Encinitas, CA/B&L Bikes) earned the silver and Victor Williams (Lonetree, CO/Natural Grocers) bronze in the day’s most contested competition.
Stacy Appelwick (Addison, IL/Bouledogue Tout Noir) collected her second national title and third medal of the week, winning the 35-39 women’s points race ahead of Christine D'Ercole (New York, NY/Affinity Cycles) and Heather VanValkenburg (Vancouver, WA/Landrover-Orbea Cycling Team-Rubicon-Orbea). In a combined race, Linsey Hamilton (Minneapolis, MN/Synergy) beat out Beth Butrymowicz (San Jose, CA/Ohana Sport-Ducati) for the 30-34 women’s points race title.
In the men’s 65+, 10-kilometer points race John Forbes (Portland, OR/Brians House of Pain) earned the gold ahead of James Kinsinger (Erie, CO/Vic’s Espresso-Peerless Tyre) in the 65-69 division, while Skip Sparry (Plano, TX/Matrix Cycling Club) and Robert Mylls (Oakton, VA) went one-two in the 70-74 category. The lone competitor to finish in the 75+ division, Thomas O'Rourke (Westbloomfield, MI/Cadieux Bicycle Club) earned his second Stars-and-Stripes of the week.
The sprint events highlighted the evening as eight titles were awarded across various men’s and women’s categories. Richard Voss (Littleton, CO/Hammer Racing Team-TVG LTD) started the sprint action off by nipping Alphonso Whaley (Houston, TX/Southern Elite-Sun & Ski Sports) for the national title amongst the 50-54s. Keith Macbeth (Santa Cruz, CA/San Jose Bicycle Club-SJBC) and Chip Berezny (Coopersburg, PA/Lehigh Wheelmen Assoc-Bike Line-LWA) squared off in the 55-59 final with Macbeth coming out on top. In the 60-64 contest Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, CA /Alto Velo Racing Club) took Ronald Hargrave (Colorado Springs, CO/Hammer Racing Team- TVG LTD) at the line for the gold.
In the most highly contest women’s sprint division of the day Ann Marie Love (Fort Worth, TX/Lone Star Racing Club) grabbed another national title and Deb Matz (Plano, TX/Texas Velos/C-Revolution) finished second after a strong showing through to the finals. Rita Kacala (Racine, WI/RPM-Hayes Brake Cycling Team), Patricia Riddle (La Jolla, CA/Racing Against Diabetes), Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, CA) and Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, CA/Lightning Velo-Cal-Pacific Export PackersLV) all earned Stars-and-Stripes in the respective 55+ division.
