Masters Track Nationals back on schedule after 12 titles on Thurs
Frisco, Texas (Sept. 2, 2010) — After inclement weather forced delay well into the afternoon the 2010 Richardson Bike Mart USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships continued on Thursday, awarding 12 national titles at the Superdrome in Frisco, Texas. After an extremely late night filled with time trials, points races and sprints, all events are back on schedule for Friday.
Racing finally resumed in the late afternoon hours on Thursday with the time trial events that were originally scheduled for Wednesday evening. Annette Williams (Kenmore, WA/Northwest Velo) won what would be the first of two Stars-and-Stripes jerseys for her on the day in the 45-49 women’s time trial. Her time of 2:36.93 bested all women’s time trialists on the day, including the women’s 40-44 winner Suzanne Goodwin (Plano, TX/Frisco Cycling Club) who recorded a 2:42.24 in the two-kilometer event.
In a tight 55-59 men’s time trial competition, Patrick Gellineau (Brooklyn, NY/Team Squiggle) edged Chip Berezny (Coopersburg, PA/Lehigh Wheelmen) by less than half a second to earn the national title. Russell Murphy (Kirkwood, MO/Mesa Cycles Shop) posted the top men’s time trial of the day with a 2:26.51 to win the 50-54 division.
Michael Miller (Birdsboro, PA/Chester County Cycling Foundation) came out on top of a stacked 40-44 men’s points race, beating silver and bronze medalists Christopher Mosora (Addison, IL/Scarlet Fire-Verizon Wireless Racing) and Tony Scott (East Point, GA/Peachtree Bikes). In another packed field Steven Carrell (Norcross, GA/Peachtree Bikes) earned the Stars-and-Stripes ahead of Darin Marhanka (Pickens, SC/Piedmont Orthopedic Associates Cycling Team) and Robert Bodamer (Humble, TX/Matrix Cycling Club) in the 40-44 men’s points race.
In the sprint events, Jonathan Fraley (Bayview, WI/ WDT-Allvoi International Cycling Team) edged Jeffrey Whiteman (Chicago, IL/Flatlandia Cycling Team) for the 30-34 title before Allen Vugrincic (Palo Alto, CA/Momentum Coaching Croup) put the moves on silver-medalist Jason Garner (Glenview, IL/Northbrook Bicycle Club Inc) in the 35-39 contest. In the finale of the men’s 65-69 sprint tournament, James Murdock (Loveland, CO/Hammer Racing Team- TVG LTD) was able to take the title from Leo Menestrina (Santa Clara, CA/Alto Velo Racing Club). James Kloss (Huntington Beach, CA/Velo Avanti Cycling Team) outsprinted Jim Turner (Menlo Park, CA/Alto Velo Racing Club-Webcor) in the men’s 70-74 division of that event. Thomas O'Rourke (Westbloomfield, MI/Cadieux Bicycle Club) and Richard Simons (Yellowsprings, OH/Midwest Masters Cycling Team) both earned their second medals of the week in the men’s 75-79 sprint; this time trading gold and silver. In the day’s only women’s sprint contest Heather VanValkenburg (Vancouver, WA/Landrover-Orbea Cycling Club-Team Rubicon) took the title over Christine D'Ercole (New York, NY/Affinity Cycles) in the 35-39 division.
The women’s 40+ points race boasted a strong field and crowned five national champions. Kimberly Edwards (Clinton, CT/Capital Velo Club) topped the largest 40-44 age group, while Williams added another Stars-and-Stripes to her closet amongst the 45-49. Shannon Youngquist Lucy (Parker, CO/Hammer Racing Team-TVG LTD), Rita Kacala (Racine, WI/RPM-Hayes Brake Cycling Team) and Marsha Macro (Littleton, CO/Hammer Racing Team-TVG LTD) each earned points race national titles in their respective age groups.
