13 Stars-and-Stripes awarded on day one of Masters Track Nationals
The 35-39 women's time trial winnners celebrate atop the podium.
Before the rains suspended competition 13 national titles were awarded in the time trial discipline, including that of Richard Simons (Yellowsprings, OH/Midwest Masters Cycling) who scored a national record time of 2:59.915 in the men’s two-kilometer 75-79 event. Simons outpaced several other riders in the event’s oldest age category, including silver-medalist and former Olympian Tom O’Rourke (West Bloomfield, Mich./Cadieux Bicycle Club) on with his record setting ride.
Jason Meidhof (Bethesda, Md./DC Velo Limited) posted the fastest three-kilometer time of the day with a 3:40.335 to win the 35-39 men’s division. Stacy Appelwick (Addison, Ill./Bouledogue Tout Noir) had the top women’s two-kilometer time of the day. Her 2:42.714 also earned her the gold, outpacing her 35-39 women’s division by more than five seconds.
In the highly contested 60-64 men’s division, Larry Wolff (Sacramento, Calif./Alto Velo Racing) recorded a 2:38.285 to earn the gold. At 71, the eldest women’s competitor of the day, Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, Calif./Lightning Velo) scored an impressive 3:43.751 in her two-kilometer event to earn another Stars-and-Stripes.
