Masters Road Nationals end with 11 more champs crowned on Sunday

Two groups of women lined up together to kick the morning action off. In the 60-64 competition, Kathleen Corbett (Glenview, Ill./Midwest Opens Cycling Team) outsprinted silver and bronze medalists Patricia Roberts (Winston Salem, NC) and Jo Johnson (Wilmington, Del./Team DRT) to claim the first Stars-and-Stripes jersey of the day. In the 65-69 event, it was Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass./Northeast Bicycle Club) to take yet another national title by beating out silver medalist Nancy Beck (Hanover Park, Ill./Midwest Opens Cycling Team).
Next up were the men in the 70-74, 75-79, and 80+ categories. 82-year-old Link Lindquist (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Team Velosport) was named national champion in the men’s 80+ division, saying afterwards that “It wasn’t too hot and it was a great course.”

In the 75-79 group, Fred Schmid (Waco, Texas/Bicycles Outback) won another national title, besting silver and bronze medalists David Shanks (Melbourne Village, Fla.) and Kurt Eickelmann (Spring Hill, Fla./Southern Sierra Cyclists) while Peter Murphy (Glastonbury, Conn./Opens Cycle Racing Breakaway) and Thomas O’Rourke (Westbloomfield, Mich./Cadieux Bicycle Club) rounded out fourth and fifth.
John Auer (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Somerset Wheelmen) rode off with a national title in the men’s 70-74 division after outsprinting second- and third-placed Kenneth Rosskopf (Decatur, Ga./Fulton Flyers) and Robert Burns (Little Torch Key, Fla.). Horst Stuewe (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena Athletic Association) and J. Beck (Hanover Park, Ill./Midwest Opens Cycling Team) were fourth and fifth in that competition.

“The guys in my age group… you’d think they could hardly walk but unfortunately these boys are still really young,” Shields commented after his win. “Trying to get away from them was a far cry from possible."

After Shields and Perlee went one and two in the sprint finish, William Logan (Perryville, Mo.) collected the bronze medal. Dale Harless (Bellevue, Wash./Cycle U) was fourth and Weslye Bruce (S. Hutchinson, Kan.) grabbed the final step of the podium.
Kenny Fuller (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Cycles Veloce) completed his sweep of the men’s 60-64 events with a third national title Sunday afternoon in the criterium. He beat out hometown hero Brad Swope (Louisville, Ky./Sonovelo) in a bunch sprint at the finish while John Elgart (Sacramento, Calif./Alto Velo Racing Club) crossed the line for the bronze. Michael Krywanski (Rockford, Mich./Priority Health Cycling Team) and Ken Louder (Salt Lake City, Utah/Velosport Racing) were fourth and fifth.

The men’s 55-59 race was super competitive and came down to a huge field sprint in the last 100 meters. In the end, it was Charles Townsend (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Paul Bicycle Racing Club) who proved to be the strongest on the day. He edged out silver and bronze medalists Thomas Bain (San Antonio, Texas/Geri Atrix) and Thomas Gates (Franklin, Tenn./Team Gran Fondo) while William Watkins (Lawrenceville, Ga./US Military Academy) and Michael Newsome (Westminster, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) put forth the fourth- and fifth-place efforts.
Gerald Finken (La Crosse, Wis./St. Paul Bicycle Racing Club) and Malcolm Hill (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Amgen-UBS Elite) went head to head in a two-man sprint at the finish in the men’s 50-54 competition with Finken coming out on top. Robert Gottlieb (Pittsburg, Pa./Three Rivers Bicycle Club) secured the bronze medal while Joseph Paulson (Boulder, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) and Gregg Betonte (Truckee, Calif./Team Bicycles Plus) completed the top five.
One of the most exciting races of the day came from the men’s 35-39 field. Right from the gun, Kevin Kremke (Houston, Texas/Bike Barn) and Chris DeMarchi (Chino, Calif./Amgen-UBS Elite) took off from the group and built a substantial gap before the first lap was even completed.“

“Kremke came up to me before the race and said, ‘Hey we got a good shot. Let’s go early’,” DeMarchi said “I was thinking laps three, four, five. He took off on lap one. I mean right at the gun. Lap one, second corner, we had 100 meters.”

DeMarchi and Kremke were eventually joined by three others to make a group of five that had nearly 40 seconds on the pack half way through the contest.
“We drilled it, drilled it, drilled it,” DeMarchi said. “We knew it was a long, hot race. We saw three, maybe four guys coming up and we decided let’s wait. We’re still strong. Let’s let them help us.”
Once the five-man group hit the last lap, an all-out battle ensued and DeMarchi took the win by a bike’s length. Curtis Long (Ponte Vedra Beach, Calif./Beaches Velo Sport) was second while Chad Madan (Macon, Ga./Litespeed-BMW) sprinted to the bronze medal. Brian Baker (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Flyers) was fourth. The man who started it all, Kevin Kremke (Houston, Texas/Bike Barn), was fifth.

The very last men to toe the line at the 2010 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships were the “baby masters” – the ones in the 30-34 age group. It was Adam Bergman (Lino Lakes, Minn./Kentucky Flyers Cycling) who, after 50 laps, outsprinted the rest of the field to take the top step of the podium. He beat out silver and bronze medalists Jonathan Jacob (Evansville, Ind./Indianapolis Cycling Club) and Tom Burke (Kentwood, Mich./Midwest Cycling Group) while Ben Faulk (Winston Salem, NC/Mock Orange Bikes) and Bradley Spears (Knoxville, Tenn./Team Sonic) were the fourth and fifth men to cross the finish line.
