Louisville, Ky. (August 7, 2010) –  Eight cyclists rode into Stars-and-Stripes jerseys on the penultimate day of the 2010 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships as criterium racing got underway on a riverfront, four-corner course in Jeffersonville, Ind.

After a powerful performance in the women’s 30-34 event, Julie Jerue (Lakeland, Fla./Outspokin Bicycles) took the top honors ahead of Kristin Wentworth (Madison, Wis./Team Kenda) and Kelly Kowalczyk (Louisville, Ky./Rogue Racing Project) while Haley Juno-Galdes (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Elizabeth Shogren (Morgantown, W.Va./Backyard Bike Club) were fourth and fifth on the first podium of the day.

The women’s 35-39 race came down to an exciting sprint finish which was won by Linda Sone (Northfield, Minn./Minneapolis Bicycle Racing Club). She edged out silver and bronze medalists Leslie Jennings (Washington DC) and Rip Nicholson (Winston Salem, NC/Carolina Flyers) while Danielle Ruane (Webster, NH/Sunapee Racing Team) and Melissa Corliss (Dayton, Ohio/Team Dayton Bicycling) were fourth and fifth.

Next up were the women in the 40-44 group. Jane Evely (Kent, Ohio/Team Summa) won the national title by outsprinting the field in dramatic fashion over the 200-meter finishing stretch.

“My goal was really to hang in there. I knew Debbie Milne, who won the road race, was going to attack quite a bit throughout the race so I was trying to stay on her wheel and make sure

she didn’t get away,” Evly explained after her podium presentation. “There were a lot of strong women and a lot of really strong attacks. The race started out from the gun really hard.”

Crossing the finish line for the silver and bronze medals were Bonnie Breeze (San Clemente, Calif./Southern California Velo) and Anne Grabowski (Shoreview, Minn./Flat City Cycling Club) while Kim Cioli (San Antonio, Texas/Team Brain and Spine Cycling) and Debbie Milne (Belden, Miss./Absolute Racing Team) rounded out the women’s 40-44 podium.

More heated racing was in store as the women in the 45-49 group toed the line for their 30-kilometer crit. Another field sprint for the finish saw Terri Clouse (Monument, Colo./ColoBikeLaw.com) take the victory ahead of Giselle Weekes (Greenville, SC/Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club). Tracy Tolson (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Flyers) and Sandra Talavera (Nashville, Tenn./Bicycle Johns Serious Cycling) were third and fourth while Marni Harker (Washington DC/Team Kenda) grabbed the podium’s final step.

In the women’s 50-54 event, Christine Schryver (Rochester, NY/Genesse Valley Cycling) was able to break away from the field on the final lap and crossed the line 13 seconds ahead of second- and third-place finishers Pamela Schuster (San Diego, Calif./Southern California Velo) and Susan McDonough (York, Me./Sports TEAM) while Laura Howat (Salt Lake City, Utah/Utah Premier-Ski Utah) and Sarah Sauvayre (New York, NY/Century Road Club Association) rode onto the fourth and fifth steps of the podium.

Ann Marie Miller
(New York, NY/Century Road Club Association) won the sprint for the Stars-and-Stripes jersey in the women’s 55-59 contest. She beat out silver and bronze medalists Diane Ostenso (Cottage Grove, Wis./Planet Bike) and Jane Geisse (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Lake Effect Cycling Team) while Barbara Grabowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Steel City Endurance) and Glenda Taylor (Topeka, Kan./Free State Racing) earned fourth and fifth.

After the women’s racing wrapped up, two groups of men toed the line for their turn in the sun. The first battle was between the men in the 45-49 group and it was James Paolinetti (Los Angeles, Calif./Amgen-UBS Elite) who outsprinted the field for the gold medal.

“It was a series of attacks all day but it was mostly ones and twos. I don’t think there was ever a group bigger than two,” the winner explained about how the race played out. “I made a couple of tries, but every time there was nobody with me… and the same for the other guys. A lot of guys were willing to chase but then there was nobody really going in moves and driving it hard. That was how the day went. I tried a couple even inside five to go and nothing stuck so I just lined it up for the field sprint.”

Michael McShane (Louisville, Ky./Better Cycling of Louisville) and Joe Baratto (Seattle, Wash./Union Bay Cycling) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

Henderson edged out Martin at the finish line to claim the national title and Aron Gadhia (Santa Monica, Calif./Amgen-UBS Elite) crossed over a few seconds later to secure the bronze medal. The final spots on the podium went to fourth- and fifth-place finishers Jason Swiatlowski (Ada, Mich./Bissell-ABG Cycling Club) and Antony Galvan (Los Angeles, Calif./Amgen-UBS Elite).
