Masters Road Nationals open with time trials in Taylorsville

Taylorsville, Ky. (August 3, 2010) – The 2010 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships got underway on Tuesday with 28 national titles awarded in the race against the clock. Racers in every age group traveled to Taylorsville to test their speed on a rolling, out-and-back time trial course.

With morning temperatures in the nineties, nine age groups went out for 20 kilometers on the course.

The first to race the clock during the morning events were the men 65-69. Clocking a 30.19.440, Jim Fox (Aptos, Calif./Team Hammer Nutrition) claimed the first gold medal of the day over silver medalist James Conway (Miramar Beach, Fla./Blue River Bicycles) who completed the course with time of 31:15.330. The bronze medal went to Richard Shaffer (Spring Grove, Pa./South Mountain Velo) while Palle Terslin (Tucson, Ariz./Team RPM) and S. Durward Higgins (Chattanooga, Tenn./Scenic City Velo) were fourth and fifth.

With a time of 31:09, William Meyers (Oak Creek, Colo.) time trialed his way to victory ahead of second- and third-place finishers Scott Tucker (Golden, Colo./Schwab Cycles Racing) and Kenneth Rosskopf (Decatur, Ga./Fulton Flyers) in the men’s 70-74 group. Robert Schulte (Kirksville, Mo.) and George Carter (Santa Ana, Calif.) rounded out the podium.

In the men’s 75-79 contest, David Ellefson (Banner Elk, NC/Veloproject.com) 34:36.710 was just a second faster than silver medalist Robert Alt (Tullahoma, Tenn./Columbia Cycling Club). Richard Reynolds (Tucson, Ariz./Summit Velo) was third while Frederic Schmid (Waco, Texas/Bicycles Outback) and Peter Murphy (Glastonbury, Conn./Masters Cycling Racing) posted the fourth and fifth fastest times.

Carl Grove (Bristol, Ind.) posted a time of 33:49 over the 20 kilometers to ride his way to the podium’s top step in the men’s 80-84 group while Link Lindquist (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Team Velosport) and Donald Werling (Port Charlotte, Fla.) collected the silver and bronze medals.

Next up was the oldest rider entered in this year’s national championships - 86-year-old Francis Underwood (Beavercreek, Ohio). With a time of 53:38.480, the veteran cyclist claimed the Stars-and-Stripes jersey in the men’s 85-89 category.

Posting the fastest time in all of the morning races, Arrietta Clauss (Madison, Wis./Madcity Velo Club) clocked a 29:50.270 over the 20 kilometers to claim the national championship among women 55-59. She bested silver medalist Ann Marie Miller (New York, NY/Century Road Club) by about a minute-and-a-half. Posting the bronze medal time was Margaret Thompson (Clinton, NY/Team Hammer Nutrition) while Elizabeth Tyrell (Annandale, NJ/Somerset Wheelmen) andB arbara Grabowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Steel City Endurance) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

Next to toe the line were the women in the 60-64 age category. With a time of 35:23, Marie De Rosa (New York, NY/VO2 Maxout.com) rode into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey ahead of second- and third-place finishers Kay Tsui (Arlington, Va./HPC) and Malonnie Kinnison (Baltimore, Md./Sublime Athletics). Jo Johnson (Wilmington, Del./Team Drt-Deep Blue) and Teresa Knight (Louisville, Tenn/Southern Cycling) rode to the podium’s fourth and fifth steps.

Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass./Northeast Bicycle) clocked a 38:53.390 to claim her 15^th career masters national title. She bested Nancy Brown (Bennet, Neb./Joyride Bicycles) and Elena Patterson (New York, NY) for the podium’s top step in the women's 65-69 contest.

“That was a lot of fun. It was hard work,” commented Lockhart after her gold medal ride. “ It was really hot and extremely humid and I was really conscious of hydrating all the way on the ride so that I wouldn’t run out of fluids.”

The final Stars-and-Stripes jersey awarded for the 20-kilometer time test went to Patty Puz (Sun Valley, Idaho/Durance Cycleworks). Completing the course with a time of 42:06, she stood on the top step of the podium for the women’s 70-74 category.

The younger categories of riders began contesting their 25.8-kilometer time trials as the afternoon sun moved overhead to heat up the course even more.

Timothy Mitchell (Ashland, Mass./CCB International) clocked a time of 29:38.820 to best the 30:02.810 posted by silver medalist Jonathan Jacob (Evansville, Ind./Indianapolis Cycling) in the men’s 30-34 contest. Matthew Weeks (Mentor, Ohio/Carbon Racing) had the bronze medal time while Sam Krieg (Pocatello, Idao/Krieg Cycling) and Eneas Freyre (Norwalk, Conn./Fastar-Targettraining) rounded out the youngest masters podium.

In the men’s 35-39 group, it was Michael Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala./Tristar Cycling Team) to ride into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. The only rider all day to break the 29 minute barrier, he posted a 28.58.390 to win the competition. Gregory Strock (Martinsville, Ind./Kentucky Flyers) and Benjamin Blaugrund (Boulder, Colo./Team Hotel San Jose) collected the silver and bronze medals while Ladd Lumpkin (Columbia, SC/South Carolina Sport) and Mike Fawell (Glen Allen, Va./HPC-List) were the fourth and fifth fastest of the day.

Richard Feldman (Ketchum, Idaho/Durance-Colnago) covered the 25.8 kilometers in a time of 29.49 to beat out second-place finisher Christopher Lyman (Napa, Calif./Team Specialized) in the men’s 40-44 division. Roger Aspholm (Haworth, NJ/Westwood Velo) put forth the bronze medal effort while Jeffery Otto (Madison, Wis./River Valley Cycling) and Paul Deninger (Iowa City, Iowa) rounded out the podium.

Among men 45-49,Brendan Sullivan (Atlanta, Ga./Iron Data Racing) was the fastest, clocking a 30:19 to win the national title ahead of Kevin Metcalfe (Pleasant Hill, Calif./Team Specialized Racing) and Todd Robertson (Boulder, Colo./Skins Racing). Craig Roemer (St. Helena, Calif./Team Specialized Racing) placed fourth while Jonathan Bold (Marstons Mills, Mass/Corner Cycle) claimed the fifth step on the podium.

Thurlow Rogers (San Diego, Calif./Amgen-Ubs) posted a time of 30:41 to win the men’s 50-54 race.  John Novitsky (Woodside, Calif./VOS Racing) grabbed the silver medal while Gary Painter (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Ft. Wayne Outfitters) earned the bronze. Eugene Palumbo (Arvada, Colo./Mix 1) and Brian Batke (Novelty, Ohio/Carbon Racing) were fourth and fifth.

In the men’s 55-59 competition, it was Robert Anderson (Mill Valley, Calif./Team Specialized) to ride to the national title. With a 32:03, he beat out silver and bronze medalists Gordon Paulsen (Cottage Grove, Wis./Planet Bike) and Vic Miera while Dennis Rainear (Richmond, Va./Team Nature’s Path) and Michael Newsome (Westminster, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) rounded out fourth and fifth.

With a 32:26,  Kenny Fuller (Corona Del Mar, Calif./Cycles Veloce) was the fastest among men 60-64, taking the gold medal ahead of Ken Louder (Salt Lae City, Utah/Velosport Racing) and Bernard Sanders (Roanoke, Va./East Coasters). Stuart Ross (Washington D.C./DC Velo Limited) and David Stevens (Vilas, NC/Veloproject.com) climbed onto the podium’s final two steps.

In the youngest women’s category, Karen Appleby-Krieg (Pocatello, Idaho/Idaho Cycling) posted a time of 35:32.040 to beat out Colleen Cornelius (Lexington, Ky./Promotioncycling.com) by about a minute. Krystal McNutt (Germantown, Ohio/Team Kenda) was third while Erica Hemmy (Fort Knox, Ky./S3 Racing Team) and Haley Juno-Galdes (Menlo Park, Calif.) were fourth and fifth.

Jenn Halladay (Juna, Idaho/Bobs Bicycles) covered the course in 33:42.330 to win the national title in the women’s 35-39 group. She beat out silver and bronze medalists Catherine James (Travelers Rest, SC/Team Kenda) and Nicole Johnson (Greenville, SC/Team Kenda) while Melissa Corliss (Dayton, Ohio/Team Dayton) and Trenna Adams (Las Vegas, Nev./Wicked Cycling) were the fourth and fifth fastest women in the group.

Among women 40-44, Laura Igoe (Lockport, NY/Buffalo Bicycling) had the fastest time trial with a time of 33:28.510. Cathy Cote (Oviedo, Fla./Atlantic Shores) earned the silver medal while Alaina Gurski (Philadelphia, Pa./Cawes p/b Specialized) grabbed the bronze. Jennifer Maxwell (Washington DC/Team Kenda) and Anne Grabowski (Shoreview, Minn./Flat City Cycling) were fourth and fifth.

In the women’s 45-49 group, it was Terrie Clouse (Mmonument, Colo./Colobikelaw.com) to take the win. She clocked a time of 34:31.240 to finish ahead of silver and bronze medalists Giselle Weekes (Greenville, SC/Greenville Spinners) and Connie Inks (Waterloo, Iowa). In fourth and fifth were Monica McDonald (Pewaukee, Wis./Team Chiropractic) and Jeanne Fleck (Proctor, Minn./Velo Duluth).

Christine Schryver (Rochester, NY/Genessee Valley) rode her way into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey with a time of 33:56.080 in the women’s 55-59 competition. MaryAnn Levenson (Menlo Park, Calif./Kalyrabella Nova) and Leigh Thompson (Winnetka, Ill./Vision Quest) posted the second and third fastest times while Marianne Holt (Matthews, NC/Carolina Bicycle) and Jane Fyffe (Canandaigua, NY) made the fourth- and fifth-place efforts.

The USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships will move to Louisville’s Cherokee Park for road races on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday before wrapping up with the criteriums across the river in Jeffersonville, Ind. on Saturday and Sunday.
