37 champs crowned at BMX National Championships on Saturday

Desoto, Texas (March 20, 2010) –Over 400 athletes converged on the Metroplex BMX track in suburban Dallas on Saturday for the fourth annual USA Cycling BMX National Championships.

Riders of all ages and abilities, from 5-year-old beginners to seasoned pros like reigning world champ Donny Robinson, braved the cold to duke it out for 37 national titles. And even though temperatures dropped into the 30’s - the racing was heated.

In the elite men’s main, Nic Long (Lakeside, Calif./Phantom-On Track) used the benefit of the inside lane to propel himself into a very strong start. With a perfect lap, he bested silver medalist Danny Caluag (Chino, Calif./Intense-The Fly-Sinz) and bronze medalist Corey Reid (Phoenix, Ariz./Speedline-Supercross). After a series of injuries kept him off the bike for a while, defending champ Jason Rogers (Mesquite, Texas/Haro) made his comeback on Saturday with a fourth-place finish. Tyler Faoro (Coral Springs, Fla./Madera BMX), Barry “Alabama Slamma” Novles (Wetumpka, Ala./Clayborn), Matt Kelty (Dover, Del./Powershot), and reigning world champ Donny Robinson (Napa, Calif./Hyper Bicycles) rounded out the finishes.

It came as no surprise in the elite women’s main when Dominique Daniels (Gilbert, Ariz.) rode her way into yet another Stars-and-Stripes jersey. The 17-year-old Daniels fought off a furious charge made by Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline) to grab the podium’s top step. After Post rode to the silver medal, Stephanie Barragan (Montclair, Calif.) rounded out the podium in third. Afton Schrimpf (Lakewood, Calif./Speedline Components), Courtney Tomei (Moreno Valley, Calif./Factory Supercross), Crystal “The Pistol” Kalogris (Fort Wayne, Ind./Kovachi Wheels), Brittany “Beans” Bates (Tacoma, Wash./Center Cycle), and Erin “2 Sweet” Moore (Fayetteville, Ark./Syndicate Cycles) crossed the line in the fourth through eighth spots.

In the final championship level event of the day, Jared “The Jet” Garcia (Victorville, Calif./QSI-Huffman Bros) grabbed the win in the junior men’s race ahead of Elliott “The Big Guy” McGrath (Isanti, Minn./Mikes Bikes) and Justin Posey (Winston-Salem, N.C./Dan’s Comp). Blake “B-Money” Foxx (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and Bryce Hocking (Carlsbad, Calif./Intense-Phantom-On Trac) were fourth and fifth respectively.

In addition to the professional and junior fields that highlighted the day, amateur racers provided plenty of action as well. Riders between the ages of 5 and 50 not only competed for the right to slip into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey on the podium’s top step, but also for eligibility to represent the U.S. at the 2010 UCI BMX World Challenge this July in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The top eight athletes in each age group earned an invitation to the amateur world championship event.

Hosted by the American Bicycle Racing Association (ABA), Saturday’s national championship event was the second of three consecutive days of world-class racing at the Metroplex BMX track. Sunday will feature another UCI Continental Calendar event with both Americans and top riders from around the globe.
