USA Cycling Continuing Education

USA Cycling’s Coaching Education Mission is to Enhance coaches abilities through excellence in education, opportunities, tools, and technology.  The purpose of our continuing education program is to support this mission and provide USA Cycling coaches with the most up to date knowledge and skills related to being a cycling coach.

Program Overview
In order to maintain a coaching license through USA Cycling, each coach is required to complete 40 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over a two-year cycle.  Coaches must submit a CEU Report Form for recertification every two (2) years, which is based on the first year the coach earned a coaching license.

***CEU Provider Seal of Approval***
USA Cycling is commited to providing Coaches with the best possible Continuing Education to train the best cyclists. In order to further this committment, USA Cycling is restructuring their CEU Provider program to include an application process to qualified providers. Potential providers must apply for the USA Cycling Continuing Education Seal of Approval by submitting the Seal of Approval Form

USA Cycling Coaches are required to complete the USOC 90 minute online SafeSport training.  Coaches will receive 3 CEU credits for completion.  New coaches purchasing a license between 9/1/14 and 11/30/15 will be alloted a 60 day grace period in order to complete the training.  Instructions on registering and taking the training are found here.

With Distinction
USA Cycling recognizes coaches who meet the 40 CEU requirement through continuing education by instilling upon them the title of coach “With Distinction”.  If a coach earns the requisite CEUs to recertify, the coach will have a *D designation on the FIND A COACH page and his/her coaching certificate will also include “With Distinction”.   The *D designation is available only when CEUs are due; the designation cannot be attained during a CEU cycle.

Calculating CEUs
In general, CEUs are based on actual clock hours or contact hours undertaken to complete an activity or event related to coaching cyclists.  In general, one contact hour equals 1.0 CEU; thus, attending an 8 hour lecture will generally yield 8 CEUs.  However, USA Cycling will assign a value for a seminar/clinic/conference based on its relevancy to coaching cyclists. Please see the list below for approved CEUs and their values.

Continuing education does NOT include the daily activities of a coach such as attending training, leading training rides, meeting with athletes, etc.

In general, to be eligible for CEUs a conference/seminar must be applicable to coaching cyclists or performance improvement related to cycling.

CEUs completed in the same calendar year as one becomes a coach count toward that year.  For instance, if a coach attends a conference which would earn CEUs in January but do not become a licensed coach until March, the course in January will count toward that year’s CEU.  However, if you become a coach in January you cannot count a course taken in the previous calendar year as CEUs.

Exception: If you become a licensed coach on or after December 1, anything you do in December counts in that 2 year cycle.  Essentially you have an extra month.  For instance, if Mary becomes a coach on December 2, 2012 then takes a USA Cycling level 2 course on December 5-7, 2012.  When she renews for 2014 she counts the December 2012 course in her 2011-2012 cycle.  However, a seminar she attended in November 2012 would not count.

Non-USA Cycling seminars/conferences
USA Cycling reserves the right to assign or deny a CEU value to non-USA Cycling seminars and conferences. CEU values are based upon relevancy to coaching cyclists and are assigned by USA Cycling, not by what another organization assigns. Again, these values are based upon the relevancy to coaching cyclists. For instance, if a coach attends a USA Triathlon conference which spends time on running, swimming, cycling, etc., only the hours spent on cycling would count.  In addition, topics which address all sports such as nutrition, periodization or sport psychology are generally credited.

USA Cycling will grant credits to seminars covering medical content if the material addresses prevention or identification, not diagnosis or treatment.  Coaches are not qualified to diagnose injuries or diseases and are not qualified to treat injuries or diseases.  Even if a certified coach has a license to practice medicine or healthcare, these skills lie outside the scope of what a cycling coach is certified to do.

If you are interested in attending or hosting a seminar or conference not listed below, contact the Coaching Education Director with the conference or activity information BEFORE attending or hosting so a CEU value may be assessed.  Please include an agenda and list of presenters with their bios so USA Cycling may determine its relevancy to cycling.

Non-USA Cycling Certifications
Non-USA Cycling accepted certifications are listed below. This list is not exhaustive.  If a certification is not listed, please contact the USA Cycling Coaching Education Director.  Please note, organizations such as USA Triathlon, USA Track and Field, USA Weightlifting, are all part of the Olympic “family” of NGBs—National Governing Bodies---and therefore categorized as Other NGB Coaching Certifications if not listed individually.

What to Turn in?
During the renewal process, a coach needs only to send in a completed CEU Report Form. Please keep a record of certificates, receipts and supporting documentation should you be chosen for an audit. CEU Report Forms will only be accepted at the time of your coaching license renewal.

Please do not turn in a CEU report form 1) prior to the due date 2) when you reach 40 CEUs 3) or “piecemeal” such as every time you complete a continuing education activity.

Each coach is responsible for maintaining a record of his/her CEU activities.  USA Cycling does not track activities outside of USA Cycling seminars or clinics.  Coaches are also responsible for maintaining a record of USA Cycling seminars and clinics attended.  To view your past CEU order, log in to your account and click on “account” (below the welcome header). Here click on the “View Order History” button.

What if I do not attain the required CEUs?
If a coach does not meet the 40 CEU requirements for the reporting period, his/her coaching license cannot be renewed.  A coach not meeting the CEU requirement may renew his/her coaching license by first paying the CEU recertification fee and/or re-taking the exam for the coach's current level of certification.

If a coach does not meet the required 40 CEUs, please use the chart below to determine your CEU recertification fee and if you need to retest. To pay the recertification fee, log into your account and click on “account” (below the welcome header). Here click on “Coaching Links (including tests)” and on the corresponding page you will find access to pay the fee. You will also find the link to take the corresponding test for your coaching level. If the link is not appearing, please email the Coaching Education Director.

Coaching Level 40+ CEUs 20-39 CEUs 0-19 CEUs
Level 3 No recertification fee/No Re-exam $20+re-examination $35+re-examination
Level 2 No recertification fee/No Re-exam $79 $149+ re-examination
Level 1 No recertification fee $129 $249
Since the level 3 exam changed, a coach may purchase Introduction to Coaching Cyclists, although it is not required.  The examination is based on the manual along with USA Cycling rules, UCI rules, and WADA/USADA anti-doping code.

Approved CEU List

Below is a list of approved 2013 CEU programs.  This list of providers will change after 12/31/15. Please refer to the current list of providers here. Please note, the programs listed are only the ones which have been sent to USA Cycling for approval.  If you are interested in a seminar or conference not listed, please send the Coaching Education Director the agenda or URL to the conference website for assignment of a CEU value.
