Fourteen world records broken so far at Masters Track Nationals
Colorado Springs, Colo. (August 21, 2009) – It was another fast day of racing at the 7-Eleven Velodrome in Colorado Springs as another 15 Stars-and-Stripes jerseys were awarded to masters riders. With four days down and two more to go, the 2009 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships have seen 14 world records broken so far.
In addition to the seven records mentioned in Thursday’s story, the following riders have also set new world records: Charlotte Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a time of 13.552 in the women’s 55-59 flying 200-meter time trial to set the new time standard while Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, Calif./Cal-Pacific Export)raised the bar for women 70+ with a time of 16.925. Jim Kloss (Huntington, Calif./Velo-Avanti) set the new record for men 70+ with his time of 12.636 in the 200-meter and Earl Henry (Pinellas Park, Fla./Florida Velo) covered the 200-meter with a new world record time of 12.258 for men 65-69. Also in the 200-meter event, Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, Calif.) clocked a 14.744 to break the world record among women 65-69 and Kurt Sato (San Pedro, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen)posted a 11.1116 for the record in the men’s 50-54 age group. In the men’s 40-44 category, Kenny Williams (Kenmore, Wash./First Rate Mortgage)clocked a new world record time of 3.26.097 in the three-kilometer time trial.
On Friday, 15 national titles were awarded to riders in the three-kilometer pursuit, sprint, and points race contests.
In the men’s 40-44 three-kilometer time trial, Kenny Williams’ world record time of 3:26.097 earned him the national title ahead of silver medalist Jason Sprouse (Industry Nine) who posted a 3:31.142. James Tainter (Silver Cycling) was the third fastest man in the contest while Kevin Nicol (Excelsports.com) and Daniel Casper (GrandStay Hotels) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.
Among men 45-49, Curtis Tolson (Louisville, Ken./Texas Roadhouse) was the fastest in the three-kilometer, posting a 3:37.064 to best the 3:37.690 clocked by second-place rider Don Saroff (Saroff Racing Team). Riding to the bronze medal was Kipp Metzger (Team RPM), and grabbing the final two steps on the podium were Victor Williams (Lonetree, Colo./Natural Grocers) and Brett Clare (Scroeder Iron).
Charles Watson (Manhattan Beach, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) earned 20 points to grab the national title in the men’s 65-69 points race. Michael Williams scored 11 for the silver medal while Barnett Feigenbaum accumulated 5 for the bronze. James Kinnger (Erie, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) and Leo Menestrina (Santa Clara, Calif./Webcor/Alto Velo) were fourth and fifth in the contest.
In the men’s 70+ points race, J. Beck (Hanover Park, Ill./Midwest Masters) rode into the men’s 70-74 Stars-and-Stripes jersey with seven points. James Kloss (Huntington, Calif./Velo-Avanti) and Jack Patterson (Morton, Ill./Midwest Masters) were the silver and bronze medalists while Skip Sparry (Plano, Texas/Matrix) and Emile Levy placed fourth and fifth. For men 75+, Thomas O’Rourke (West Bloomfield, Mich./Team O2) claimed the national title.
Next up for the points race were the women in the 30-34 age group. Kate Gracheck (Colorado Springs, Colo./Team Kenda) earned the national title with three points while Megan Hottman (Golden, Colo./DFT p/b Treads) got two points for the silver medal. Andrea Benson was third and Catherine Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Rocky Mounts) and Amy Creed (Colorado Springs, Colo.) rounded out the podium.
Brooke O’Connor (Billerica, Mass./NEBC/Cycle Loft ) amassed 15 points in the women’s 35-39 points race to ride her way into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey ahead of Jennifer Reither (Chatsworth, Calif./Vanderkitten Racing) who scored 13. Renee Eastman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Natural Grocers), Jeanie Bihlmaier (Provo, Utah/Specialized), and Gina Barbosa (San Diego, Calif./Adams Avenue) were third, fourth, and fifth.
Ann Marie Love (Fort Worth, Texas/Matrix) beat out Lorraine Jarvis (San Anselmo, Calif./Proman Hit Squad) in the final of the women’s 50-54 sprint to claim the national title. In the race for the bronze, it was Patricia Marzi (Kutztown, Pa./Salamander) to take the win ahead of Melanie Peterson while Cathy Morgan won the race for fifth-place.
Patricia Riddle (La Jolla, Calif./Racing Against Diabetes) and Patricia Baker (Laguna hills, Calif./Cal-Pacific Export) slipped into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey for the women’s 60-64 and women’s 70+ sprint contests while Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, Calif./Hammer Racing Team) earned the gold medal ahead of Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass./NEBC/CycleLoft/Devon) in the women’s 65-69 contest.
In the women’s 55-59 sprint, Charlotte Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pike sPeak Velo) bested Barbara Thiele (Hillsboro, Ore./Team Rose City) for the national title while Catherine Nicoletti (Nederland, Colo./Title Nine) earned the bronze medal.
Ron Hargrave (Colorado Springs, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) was on fire in the men’s 60-64 sprints. He beat out Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, Calif./Webcor/Alto Velo) in the final for the gold medal. Henry Shibata (Encino, Calif./Encino Velo Cycling) bested Fran Rudy in the race for bronze while Norman Kibble grabbed the final spot on the podium in fifth.
Chip Berezny (Easton, Pa./Bike Line/LWA) grabbed a gold medal when he beat out Butch Stinton in the final of the men’s 55-59 sprint. Bill Ziegler (Oceanside, Calif./PAA/REMAX) bested Keith Macbeth (San Jose, Calif./Team Rapido) for the bronze medal and Dairo Moody grabbed the fifth-place spot.
In the final sprint of the evening, Richard Voss rode his way into the national champ’s jersey for men 50-54. He beat out new world record setter Kurt Sato (South Bay Wheelmen) while Aron Seiken (Mortiz Chevrolet Cycling), Christopher Regan, and Ken Rodriguez (Hammer Racing Team) placed third, fourth, and fifth.
