Twelve more titles awarded on day 3 of Masters Track Nationals

Colorado Springs, Colo. (August 20, 2009) – Twelve more masters national champions were crowned in Colorado Springs on Thursday as racing continued at the 7-Eleven Velodrome. Anyone who has watched the racing this week knows just how fast of a track the 7-Eleven Velodrome is.On the first two days of competition alone, seven world records were broken.

Cynthia Boyenger (Team Hammer Nutrition) set the new world record for women 45-49 in the 500-meter time trial with a 38.591 while Rita Kacala (Racine, Wis./RPM/Hayes Disc Brake) re-set the standard for the women’s 50-54 category with a 39.357. Marsha Macro (Littleton, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) clocked a 44.128 over the same distance to become the world record holder among women 65-69 while Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, Calif./Cal-Pacific Export) accomplished the same feat among women 70+ with a time of 52.934. In the two-kilometer event, Jane Rinard (Brazen Dropouts) posted a 2:47.693 to become the new world record holder among women’s 55-59.  James Kloss (Huntington, Calif./Velo Avanti) clocked the new 500-meter world record time for the men’s 70-74 age group with a 39.012 while Thomas O’Roark (West Bloomfield, Mich./Team O2)set the new standard over the same distance for men 75+ with his time of 43.116. The fast action continued on Thursday with the first national titles going to riders in the points race and sprint competitions.  

 

In the women’s 50-54 event, Linda Elgart (Sacramento, Calif.) accumulated 17 points to ride into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey ahead of silver and bronze medalists Melanie Peterson (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Melissa McCafferty (Manitou Springs, Colo.) who scored 11 and 9 respectively. Shannon Youngquist (Parker, Colo.) and Patricia Marzi (Kutztown, Pa.) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

 

Charlotte Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored three points to claim the national title in the women’s 55-59 group. With three points, Jane Rinard took the silver medal while Catherine Nicoletti (Nederland, Colo.) and Barbara Thiele (Hillsboro, Ore.) were fourth and fifth.

 

The lone woman in the 65+ category, Marsha Macro (Littleton, Colo.) slipped into another Stars-and-Stripes jersey with five points.

Christi Chenowth (Dallas, Texas) scored twelve points to take another national title in the women’s 45-49 points race while Renee Schroeder (Nederland, Colo./Rocky Mounts/IZZE) rode to the silver medal with ten points. Sallie Urffer (Whitehall, Pa./Bikeline/LWA) scored three for the bronze while Meg Mautner (Portland, Ore.) and Jane Chateaubriand (Seattle, Wash./Starbucks) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

 

Combined with the women’s 45-49 group were the women in the 40-44 age category. Taking the win for that group was Julie Nevitt (Saratoga, Calif./SJBC/Sugar CRM) with 25 points. Leslie Meadows (Asheville, NC/Team Velosports) earned the silver with five points.

 

As the morning session saw riders in several categories contest their sprint qualification and quarter-final rounds, the evening session awarded seven national titles in the sprint.

 

After riding to the new world record in his 50o-meter time trial on Tuesday, Thomas O’Rourke (West Bloomfield, Mich./Team O2) showed his speed again on Thursday. The 1952 Olympian rode at a speed of 50 kilometers per hour to post a time of 14.380 during the morning session’s 200-meter sprint qualification for men 70+. As the only rider with a racing age of 74 or older, O’Rourke slipped into another Stars-and-Stripes jersey during the evening session’s award ceremony.

 

James Kloss (Huntington Beach, Calif./Velo Avanti) took the gold medal in the sprint for men in the 70-74 age category. He bested silver Richard Keller (Oconomowoc, Wis./Midwest Masters) in the semi final round while Jack Patterson (Morton, Ill./Midwest Masters) b eat out J. Beck (Hanover Park, Ill./Midwest Masters) for the bronze medal and Emile Levy won the race for fifth.

 

In the men’s 65-69 sprint, it was Earl Henry (Pinellas Park, Fla./Florida Velo) who rode off with the gold medal ahead of Leo Menestrina (Santa Clara, Calif./Webcor/Alto Velo). Charles Watson (Manhattan Beach, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) won the bronze medal race by besting John McQuaide (San Diego Cyclo Vets). Barnett Feigenbaum grabbed the final spot on the podium in fifth.

Next up were the women in the 35-39 age group. Christine D’Ercole (Brooklyn, NY/Affinity) beat out Shane Ellis (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Team Hammer Nutrition) in the final to slip into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey while Dena Eaton (La Jolla, Calif./Momentum) bested Ingrid Alongi (Boulder, Colo.) in the race for the bronze. Kara Vidaca rounded out the podium in fifth.

 

In the women’s 30-34 sprint, Heather Vanvalkenburg (Vancouver, Wash./Land Rover-Orbea) won the national title while Megan Hottman (Golden, Colo./DFT p/b Treads) and Amy Creed (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the silver and bronze medals.

 

In the men’s 35-39 sprint, Andrew LaCorte (Plainview, NY/Affinity Cycles) beat out Jason Garner (Glenview, Ill./Northbrook Bicycles) in the final to slip into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. Ryan Crane (Houston, Texas/American Track Foundation) bested Wesley Pierce (Seattle, Wash./Wines of Washington) in the bronze medal round while Adam Smith won the race for the podium’s final step.

In the final sprint of the evening, Jonathan Fraley (Bayview, Wis./WDT/Allvoi) won gold in the men’s 30-34 group ahead of silver medalist Marius Farioletti (Brooklyn, NY/Affinity Cycles). Riding to the bronze was Randy McLain (Boulder, Colo./Hammer Racing Team). Martin Houston (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was fourth while Daniel Lim was fifth.
