Day #2 of Masters Track Nationals sees 18 more champions crowned

Colorado Springs, Colo. (August 19, 2009) – The USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships continued at the 7-Eleven Velodrome in Colorado Springs on Wednesday with two- and three-kilometer pursuits as well as the first points race competitions. Eighteen more masters riders slipped into Stars-and-Stripes jerseys on day #2.

Starting off the morning session was the three-kilometer pursuit for men in the 35-39 age group. Jason Meidhof (Bethesda, Md./Clean Currents) clocked a time of 3:33.733 to best the 3:41.330 clocked by silver medalist John Allen (Long Beach, Calif./Team Velocity). Neal Henderson (Boulder, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) rode his way to a bronze medal while Wesley Pierce (Seattle, Wash./Wines of Washington) and Guy Tucker (Bellingham, Wash./IJM.org) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

In the men’s 30-34 three-kilometer event race against the clock, Randy McLain (Boulder, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) grabbed his second national title in as many days when he posted a time of 3:42.822 to beat out second-place finisher Nick Traggis (Boulder, Colo./Horizon Organic) who posted a 3:44.215. Mike Zagorski (West Hollywood, Calif./Pacific Velo) and Joseph Klarer
(Louisville, Ken.) rode their way to the third and fourth steps on the podium.

James Kloss
(Huntington, Calif./Velo-Avanti) also slipped into his second Stars-and-Stripes jersey of the national championships by finishing the men’s 70-74 two-kilometer pursuit with a time of 2:44.856. He bested Jack Patterson (Morton, Ill./Midwest Masters) who completed the contest in 2:52.789. Jim Turner (Menlo Park, Calif./Webcor/Alto Velo) had the third fastest time while J. Beck (Hanover Park, Ill./Midwest Masters) and Richard Keller (Oconomowoc, Wis./Midwest Masters) claimed the final two podium spots.

Another racer that rode his way into a second national champ’s jersey was Thomas O’Rourke (West Bloomfield, Mich./Team O2). O’Rourke covered 2000 meters at a speed of 38.410 kilometers per hour to clock a time of 3:07.453 and claim the national title in the men’s 75+ category.

Charles Watson (Manhattan Beach, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) improved on his fifth-place performance in the opening day 500-meter time trial with a solid win in Wednesday’s men’s 65-69 two-kilometer pursuit. The new national champ completed the contest with  a time of 2:41.084 which was two seconds faster than the time posted by silver medalist Michael Williams. John McQuaide (San Diego, Calif./San Diego Cyclo Vets) grabbed the bronze medal while Leo Menestrina (Santa Clara, Calif./Webcor/Alto Velo) and James Kinsinger (Erie, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth respectively.

John Goodman (Cary, Ill./Midwest Masters) bested the men’s 60-64 field of 13 riders by clocking a time of 2:36.070 over the two kilometers. Lawrence Bosh (Fort Collins, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) was the second fastest for the silver medal while David Mulica (Littleton, Colo.) was the third fastest for the bronze medal. Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, Calif./Webcor/Alto Velo) and Tracy Evans (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Acqua A2 San Diego) rode onto the podium’s fourth and fifth steps.

The women’s 65-69 podium for the pursuit was a repeat of Tuesday’s time trial. Marsha Macro (Littleton, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) again posted the fastest time to take the gold medal while Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, Calif.) and (Dunstable, Mass./NEBC/CycleLoft/Devon) put forth the silver and bronze medal efforts.Julie Lockhart

Patricia Baker
(Laguna Hills, Calif./Cal-Pacific Export) covered the 2000 meters at 32.748 kilometers per hour to post a time of 3:39.861 for another gold medal in the women’s 70+ category while Patricia Riddle (La Jolla, Calif./Racing Against Diabetes) posted a 3:12.004 at 37.499 kilometers per hour to slip into another national champ’s jersey in the women’s 60-64 group.

In the women’s 55-59 two-kilometer contest, Jane Rinard (Brazen Dropouts) rode at 42.936 kilometers per hour to clock a 42.936 for her second gold medal of the national championships so far. Tove Shere (Santa Fe, NM/TNP.com) earned the silver with a time of 2:58.760 while Charlotte Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pikes Peak Velo) and Barbara Thiele (Hillsboro, Ore./Team Rose City) grabbed the third and fourth spots on the podium.

Lenita Anthony (San Diego, Calif./Leaderbike/Canari) covered the two kilometers in 2:44.606 to take the national title in the women’s 50-54 race ahead of Tuesday’s national champ Rita Kacala (Racine, Wis./RPM/Hayes Disc Brake) who posted a 2;45.687. Shannon Youngquist (Parker, Colo./Hammer Racing Team), Lorraine Jarvis (San Anselmo, Calif./Proman Hit Squad), and Patricia Marzi (Kutztown, Pa./Salamander) rode to the third, fourth, and fifth place steps on the podium.

In the women’s 35-39 contest, Renee Eastman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Natural Grocers) rode at a speed of 45.137 kilometers per hour to finish the two-kilometer pursuit in 2:39.516. Eastman slipped into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey ahead of Ingrid Alongi (Boulder, Colo.) who posted a 2:39.741 for the silver medal. Lana Atchley (San Diego, Calif./Bailey Bikes), Jeanie Bihlmaier (Provo, Utah/Specialized), and Kara Vidaca (Corona, Calif./Acqua Al 2/San Diego) were third, fourth, and fifth.

The evening session kicked off with the women’s 45-49 two-kilometer pursuit in which Annabell Holland (Santa Clara, Calif./SJBC/Sugar CRM) took the win with a 2:45.624 posted over the two kilometers. Jan Lischer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) was about two seconds off the winning pace for the silver medal while Christi Chenowth (Dallas, Texas) collected the bronze. Sallie Urffer (Whitehall, Pa./Bikeline/LWA) and Meg Mautner (Portland, Ore.) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.

In the women’s 40-44 two-kilometer event, Christine Phillips (Chandler, Ariz./Strada) improved on her silver medal performance from Tuesday, winning the gold medal with a time of 2:41.662. She bested Kimberly Nuffer (Denver, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) who posted a 2:46.988 for the silver and  Cohen (Tuscon, Ariz./Desert Foxes) who posted a 3:29.699 for the bronze.

The men’s 50-54 2-kilometer pursuit was won by Lawrence Nolan (Fremont, Calif./Team Specialized Racing) with a time of 2:19.661. Nolan took the gold over James Host (Plainsfield, Ill./PACT-Dish Network) who posted a 2:21.973. Robert Black (Saroff Racing Team) rode to the bronze medal while Kent Menzel (Greencastle, Ind./Scheller’s Indiana) and Scott Butler (Nazareth, Pa./Bike Line/LWA) rode to fourth and fifth.

Steven Worley (Boulder, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) rode his way to the podium’s top step with a time of 2:27.863 in the men’s 55-59 2-kilometer pursuit. He took the win ahead of silver medalist Chip Berezny (Easton, Pa./Bike Line/LWA) who clocked a 2:29.837. Shannon Fox (Englewood, Colo./Pro Peloton) earned the bronze medal while Barry Messmer (Red Feather, Colo./Vic’s Espresso Peer) and Andrew Buck (Dreshner, Pa./Bike Lane/LWA) posted the fourth and fifth fastest times.

Next up were the beginning of the points race competitions. In the men’s 40-44 25-kilometer contest, nobody lapped the field, but Clark Sheehan (Boulder, Colo.) collected 30 points and crossed the line first to take the national title ahead of Keith Harper (Boulder, Colo.) who earned 27 points and Michael Hutchinson (San Jose, Calif.) who earned 18. Kenny Williams (Kenmore, Wash.) and Mike McMahon (Lake Forest, Calif.) amassed 14 and 12 points respectively to stand on the podium’s final two steps.

In the men’s 45-49 group, four riders lapped the field twice to take over the race: Curtis Tolson (Louisville, Ken.), Steven Carrell (Norcross, Ga.), Victor Williams (Lonetree, Colo.), and James Keiser (Cincinnati, Ohio). Tolson amassed 62 points to slip into the Stars-and-Stripes jersey while Carrell earned 55 for the silver medal. Williams scored 50 for the bronze and Keiser collected 47 for fourth place. Riding to the podium’s final step was Robert Bodamer (Humble, Texas) who lapped the field once and earned 37 points.
