18 national champs crowned on day 1 of Masters Track Nationals
Although the threat of rain loomed, it held off and turned out to be a perfect day for the men and women in all age categories to race the clock in the one-kilometer and 500-meter time trial events.
The men in the 35-39 age category got things rolling at 9 a.m. with eleven men that raced the clock. Per Bjesse (Portland, Ore.) clocked the fastest time over the kilometer with a time of 1:07.438 compared to the 1:08.136 clocked by silver medalist Ryan Crane (Houston, Texas/American Track Found). Jason Garner (Glenview, Ill./Northbrook Bicycle) posted the bronze medal time while Wesley Pierce (Seattle, Wash./Wines of Washington) and Neal Henderson (Boulder, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) rounded out the first podium of the event in fourth and fifth respectively.
In the men’s 30-34 event, Randy McLain (Boulder, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) covered the kilometer at 52.181 miles per hour to post a time of 1:08.991 and take the gold medal over Jonathan Fraley (Bayview, Wis./WDT/Allvoi) who posted a 1:10.294. Mike Zagorski (West Hollywood, Calif./Pacific Velo) had the third fastest time while Joseph Klarer (Louisville, Ken.) grabbed the podium’s fourth spot.
The next group to go off consisted of nine men age 70 and over. James Kloss (Huntington, Calif./Velo Avanti) rode his way into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey by covering 500 meters with a time of 39.012 compared to the 40.972 posted by his nearest threat, Richard Keller (Oconomowoc, Wis./Midwest Masters). J. Beck (Hanover Park, Ill./Midwest Masters Cycling), Skip Sparry (Plano, Texas/Matrix), and Jack Patterson (Morton, Ill./Midwest Masters) rode to the third, fourth, and fifth spots on the podium.
Covering the 500 meters in 43.116 for the men’s 75+ national title was Thomas ORourke (West Bloomfield, Mich./Team O2)
Leo Menestrina (Webcor/Alto Velo) rode his way onto the top step of the podium when he covered the 500 meters in 38.502 in the men 65-69 contest. Six-tenths of a second back was Earl Henry (Pinellas Park, Fla./Florida Velo) while James Kinsinger (Erie, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) collected the bronze medal and John McQuaide (San Diego, Calif./San Diego Cyclo Vets) and Charles Watson (Manhattan Beach, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) were fourth and fifth.
Next up were the 19 men in the 60-64 category. Reid Schwartz (Chicago, Ill./Midwest Masters)was the fastest man of the day, covering the 500 meters in 36.962 while silver medalist Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, Calif./Webcor/Alto Velo) finished in 37.595. Ronald Hargrave (Colorado Springs, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) posted the bronze medal time while Henry Shibata (Encino Velo Cycling) and Lawrence Bosch (Fort Collins, Colo./Vic’s Espresso) filled the podium’s fourth and fifth steps.
The next rider to race the clock was Patricia Baker (Laguna Hills, Calif./Cal-Pacific Export). Riding at a speed of 34 kilometers per hour, Baker posted a time of 52.934 to earn the gold medal for the women’s 70+ 500-meter contest.
Marsha Macro (Littleton, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) clocked a 44.128 on the track for a win in the women’s 65-69 category while Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, Calif.) earned the silver medal, just six-tenths of a second off the winning pace. Multi-time national champ Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass./NEBC/CycleLoft/Devon) took the bronze.
Patricia Riddle (La Jolla, Calif./Racing Against Diabetes) was the sole woman to race the clock in the 60-64 category, and she with a time of 44.402, she rode into the national champion’s jersey at a speed of 40.539 kilometers per hour.
In the women’s 55-59 contest, Jane Rinard (Brazen Dropouts) won with a time of 41.024, nearly three seconds faster than silver medalist Tove Shere (Santa Fe, NM/TNP.com). Barbara Thiele (Hillsboro, Ore./Team Rose City) and Catherine Nicoletti (Nederland, Colo./Title Nine) were third and fourth.
The women’s 50-54 competition was quite close as the gold and silver medalists were only separated by a tenth of a second. It was Rita Kacala (Racine, Wis./RPM/Hayes Disc Brake) to ride to the podium’s top step with a time of 39.357. Lorraine Jarvis (San Anselmo, Calif./Proman Hit Squad) collected silver after clocking a 39.489. Lauren Jacobsen (Studio City, Calif./NOW-MS Society), Ann Marie Love (Fort Worth, Texas/Matrix), and Patricia Marzi (Kutztown, Pa./Salamander) were third, fourth, and fifth.
CJ Boyenger (Team Hammer Nutrition) earned the right to wear the national champion’s jersey as the fastest woman in the 45-49 age group. With a time of 38.591, she bested Annabell Holland (SJBC Sugar CRM) who posted a 38.976 for the silver medal while Christi Chenowth (Dallas Texas) was the third fastest. Jan Lischer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) and Jane Chateubriand (Seattle, Wash./Starbucks) were fourth and fifth.
In the final event of the morning session, Kimberly Nuffer (Denver, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) was three seconds faster than her nearest threat with a time of 38.454 to earn the national title. Christine Phillips (Chandler, Ariz.) got silver with a 41.742 while Carol Kauder (Boulder, Colo./Title Nine) and Lesli Meadows (Arden, NC./Team Velosports) were third and fourth.
The evening session on opening day consisted of only five time trials with Bill Ziegler (Oceanside, Calif./PAA/Remax) posting a 36.129 to take the first national title of the night in the men’s 55-59 contest. Chip Berezny (Easton, Pa./Bike Line/WA) was the second fastest in 37.449 while Keith Macbeth (San Jose, Calif./Team Rapido) collected the bronze medal and Daniel Rock (Encinitas, Calif./Swamis) and Jay Preston (Waukesha, Wis./One Percent More Racing) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth respectively.
Kurt Sato (South Bay Wheelmen) was the next man to slip into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey with his time of 35.563 in the men’s 50-54 competition. Scott Butler (Bike Line/LWA) was second, posting a 35.846 over the 500 meters while Ken Rodriguez (Hammer Racing Team) earned the bronze medal and Steven Sawelson (South Bay Wheelmen) and Aron Seiken (Moritz Chevrolet Cycling) stood on the podium’s fourth and fifth steps.
In the women’s 35-39 contest, Shane Ellis (Team Hammer Nutrition) rode the 500 meters in 39.027 to beat out silver medalist Kara Vidaca (Acqua Al 2/San Diego) who posted a 39.886. Dena Eaton (Momentum p/b Hawk) was third while Christine D’ercole (Affinity) and Dominique Hall (Brooklyn, NY) rode to the podium’s fourth and fifth spots.
Christopher Best (Utah Premier) covered a kilometer in 1:08.969 to win the gold medal in the highly competitive men’s 45-49 category. He bested silver medalist Curtis Tolson (Texas Roadhouse) who clocked a 1:09.516 and Kipp Metzger (Team RPM) who clocked a 1:09.695. Gregory Pshsnychniak (Ouch) and Victor Williams (Natural Grocers) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.
In the final time trial of the night, Kenny Williams (1st Rate Mortgage) was the last rider to go off, and he took over the winning spot in the final lap of his kilometer contest. With a time of 1:07.02, he took the gold medal over James Tainter (Silver Cycling) who finished the event in 1:08.140. Aron Gadhia (Kahala La Grange) rode to the bronze medal, and Roger Hernandez (Nitroshot Cycling Team) and Pekka Jaske (First Rate Mortgage) were fourth and fifth.
