Sixteen Stars-and-Stripes jerseys awarded in Bend on Friday

The week of bike racing is proving to be a good one for Mike Olheiser who claimed his second elite-level national title in as many days on Friday. Clocking a time of 45:55 over the 35-kilometer course, Olheiser rode into his Stars-and-Stripes jersey twenty seconds ahead of silver medalist Adrian Hegyvary (Belavue, Wash./Hagens-Berman) and over a minute faster than bronze medalist Greg Krause (Littleton, Colo.).

In an incredibly close elite women’s contest, Jessica Phillips beat out the nation’s top female cyclists with a time of 50:35. Just one-second off the winning pace was Evelyn Stevens (New York, NY/Webcor Builders) while Alison Powers (Boulder, Colo./Team Type 1) was 23 seconds of the winning time for the bronze medal.

Peter Stetina (Boulder, Colo./Felt Holoweso Partners Garmin) had an incredible race against the clock, finishing 23 seconds faster than his nearest threat Bjorn Selander (Hudson, Wis./Trek-Livestrong). Clocking a 45:34 over the 35 kilometers, the 22-year-old claimed the U23 men’s national title. Taking the third step on the podium was Rabobank Continental rider Tejay Van Garderen (Fort Collins, Colo.) with a time of 46:22.

Jackie Crowell (Orlando, Fla./Team Type 1) earned the very first national title for Team Type 1 in the U23 Women’s race. Finishing the course in a time of 53:44, she bested second-place finisher Jerika Hutchinson (Team Tibco) by 12 seconds and third-place rider Rachel Warner (Luray, Va./Charlottesville Racing Club) by 50 seconds.

In the junior men’s 17-18 event, Charlie Avis (Team Specialized) was ten seconds faster than Anders Newbury (Fairfield, Vt./Hot Tubes) and 11 seconds faster than Adam Liebovitz (Indianapolis, Ind./Mesa Cycling). Cody Foster (The Woodlands, Texas) was fourth while Andrew Barker (Lakdewood, Colo./5280), who is straight off his win in the 2009 Tour de l’Abitibi, rounded out the U23 men’s podium in fifth.

Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill./ABD Cycling Team) won a heated junior women’s 17-18 time trial, clocking a time of 40:38 over the 24-kilometer junior course to upset 24-time national champ Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Proman Hit Squad) who clocked a 41:31. Kendall Ryan (Ventura, Calif./VRC Now) rode to the bronze medal in 41:34.

Yannick Eckmann (Boulder, Colo./5280) improved on his silver medal performance in Tuesday’s road race by time trialing his way to a gold medal in the junior men’s 15-16 event. His time of 35:37 was 22 seconds faster than the time posted by silver medalist Paul Lynch (Colchester, Conn./Mystic Velo Club) and about 40 seconds faster than bronze medalist Willy Zellmer (Missoula, Mont./Hammer Nutrition).

The top two women in the junior women’s 15-16 road race traded places on the podium for the time trial on Friday. Tuesday’s silver medalist Somersby Jenkins (Santa Barbara, Calif./Echelon of Santa Barbara) found herself on the top step after winning the 24-kilometer event with a time of 42:38. Road race champ Ruth Winder (Lafayette, Calif./Proman Hit Squad) was 16 seconds off of Somersby’s winning pace for the silver medal while Jacqueline Denny (Liberty, Mo./GP Velotek) clocked a 43:57 for the bronze medal.

Michael Dessau (Boulder, Colo./5280) is proving to dominate the junior men’s 13-14 field so far this week, as he earned his second national title on Friday. Posting the winning time of 16:52 over 12 kilometers, he bested Jordan Cullen (Hudson, Wis./MBRC/Flanders) by nine seconds and bronze medalist Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Hagens Berman) by 11 seconds.

Sarah Youmans (Ketchum, Idaho/BYRDS) won the junior women’s 13-14 time trial with a time of 19:40. Road race champ Zoe Frazier (Suwanee, Ga./Frazier Cycling) clocked the silver medal time while Bailey Semian (Mertztown, Pa./Team Vortex Cycling Club) earned the bronze medal.

On Tuesday, Ian McShane (Louisville, Ken.) finished fifth in the junior men’s 10-12 road race, but by Friday, he found himself on the podium’s top step. Completing the hot course with a time of 19:57, he bested silver medalist Jack Maddux (Fresno, Calif.) and bronze medalist Logan Feasline (Post Falls, Idaho).

Ciara Hopkins (Clermont, Calif./Orland Road Club) clocked a time of 21:48 to slip into her second Stars-and-Stripes jersey of the National Championships. The road race winner added a time trial national title to her resume by beating out silver and bronze medalists Emma White (Delanson, NY/Capital Bicycle Racing Club) and Amelia Tanner (Irvine, Calif./Jetcycling)

Time trial day was also highlighted by Paralympic racing, which saw four national champs crowned.

In the women’s CP 1-2 category, former pro downhill mountain biker Tara Llanes (Los Alamitos, Calif.) made her comeback to the sport by covering 11.9 kilometers with a time of 33:43 for the Stars-and-Stripes jersey.

Jennifer Schuble (Homewood, Ala.) won a national title in the women’s LC, CP3-4 class by clocking a 33:50 over 20 kilometers to best silver medalist Greta Neimanas (Colorado Springs, Colo./XXX Racing-Athletico) and bronze medalist Mackenie Woodring (Priority Health/Grand Rapids, Mich.).

In the men’s events, David Swanson (Tuscon, Ariz./Summit Velo) rode his way into a Stars-and-Stripes jersey by covering 20 kilometers with a time of 27:43 while Craig Vogtsberger (Kalamaoo, Mich./CAF-OR) and Anthony Zahn were second and third on the podium.

Oscar Sanchez (San Diego, Calif.) scored the gold medal in the men’s hand cycling event with Alejandro Albor (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and David Randall (Mansfield, Ohio) taking the silver and bronze medals.

Two more days remain at the 2009 USA Cycling Junior, U23, Elite, and Paralympic Road National Championships with an action-packed day planned for Saturday. The juniors ages 10-16 will contest their criteriums in Bend’s Old Mill District. Come back to www.usacycling.org for a recap of the races.
