Nine more criterium titles awarded at Masters Road Nationals

Louisville, Ky. (July 5, 2008)—Nine more national criterium champions were crowned Saturday in the penultimate day of the 2008 USA Cycling Master Road National Championships at Churchill Downs – two of which completed a sweep of all three individual events.
 
Franz Hammer (Oro Valley, Ariz./First Mortgage) outsprinted his five opponents in the men ‘s 70-74 criterium on Saturday to finish the week with his third Stars-and-Stripes jersey. On Monday, Hammer won his category in the time trial before winning the road race on Wednesday.
 
Multi-time national champion Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass./NEBC-CycleLoft-Devonshire Dent) was also presented with her third national championship jersey of the week after the women’s 65+ criterium. Lockhart also came away with titles in the time trial and road race earlier this week.
 
Also on Saturday, Anne Marie Miller (N.Y./Metro Sanchez-CRCA) and Elizabeth Tyrell (Annandale, N.J.) each added criterium titles to their respective time trial championships. Miller outsprinted 13 others to win the women’ 50-54 criterium and Tyrell finished 56 seconds ahead of the field in the women’s 55-59 race to claim her victory.
 
In the largest field of the day, Wayne Stetina (Mission Viejo, Calif./Amgen-Giant Masters Racing) won a three-up sprint in the men’s 55-59 category, finishing 37 second ahead of the main field in the 19-mile contest.
 
In the men’s 60-64 criterium, John Elgart (Sacramento, Calif./Webcor-Alto Velo) won a field-sprint finish. For Elgart, it was his second national title of the week after comprising one half of the winning 90+ tandem road race squad earlier in the week.
 
Other national champions crowned on Saturday include Earl Henry (Pinellas Park, Fla.) in the men’s 65-69 race, Frederic Schmid (Waco, Texas/Bicycles Outback) in the men’s 75+ category and Jo Johnson (Wilmington, Del./DRT-Deep Blue) in the women’s 60-64 criterium.
 
The 2008 USA Cycling Master Road National Championships conclude on Sunday with the final five criterium races – the men’s 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 and 50-54 age groups.
