Four win Stars-and-Stripes jerseys on Fourth of July in Louisville

Louisville, Ky. (July 4, 2008)—Some of the nation’s top amateur road cyclists celebrated the Fourth of July on Friday by racing to national criterium titles as the 2008 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships continued at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
 
Four women claimed Stars-and-Stripes jerseys in the discipline of criterium racing. In the first race of the day, Betsy Galenti (Pomona, Calif./SC Velo-In Cycle) claimed a national title in the 30-34 age group by winning a four-up sprint after 25 miles of racing.
 
In the women’s 35-39 category, Jane Evely (Kent, Ohio/Team Summa) won the eight-woman field-sprint finish after 25 miles to earn her first national title of the week.
 
After 20 miles of racing, Kim Ciolli (San Antonio Texas/Team Solar Eclipse) was crowned the national champion in the 40-44 criterium after winning a race which ended in a 10-woman field-sprint.
 
In the final race of the day, Tracy Tolson (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Flyers) added a criterium national title to her road race championship when she captured the 20-mile 45-49 race by outsprinting her two breakaway companions at the line.
 
Racing continues at Churchill Downs on Saturday with more criterium titles set to be decided in the men’s 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70+ races in addition to the women’s 50-54, 55-59, and 60+ contests.
