Last 11 road race titles claimed at Masters Road Nationals

Louisville, Ky. (July 3, 2008)—Day four of the 2008 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships closed out the road race competitions as three more individual champions were crowned and several tandem pairs came away with Stars-and-Stripes jerseys. The annual national championship event for amateur racers age 30 and up will next feature the third and final discipline of competitive road cycling as criterium racing will head to Churchill Downs for the final three days.
 
On Thursday, Paul Martin (North Royalton, Ohio) took the win in the 60-mile men’s 35-39 race, John Korioth (Austin, Texas) won the 50-mile men’s 40-44 event, and Thurlow Rogers (Simi Valley, Calif.) captured a national title in the 50-mile men’s 45-49 race.
 
For Rogers, Thursday’s road race title was his second national championship of the week after the 1984 Olympian claimed a Stars-and-Stripes jersey in the time trial on Monday. For Martin and Korioth, Thursday’s victories were their first of the week.
 
Thursday also saw four tandem pairs add a second national title to their list of accomplishments this week. The team of Gordon Paulson and Diane Ostenso of Cottage Grove, Wis. added a road race title in the mixed 110+ road race to their time trial victory on Monday. Other pairs who complemented victories in the race against the clock with road race wins on Thursday include Cara McCauley and Andrew Applegate of Black Mountain, N.C. in the mixed 70+ category, Jill Gass and Sonia Ross of Santa Barbara, Calif. in the women’s 90+ race and AnnaJean Dallaire and Lesley McShane of Louisville, Ky. in the women’s 70+ category.
 
Additionally, the team of William Crecelius and Stephen Spanbauer of Louisville, Ky. captured a national title in the men’s 70+ tandem category, Bryan Lofton (Orange Park, Calif.) and Douglas Pomeranz (Atlanta, Ga.) won the men’s 90+ category, Denise and James Everett of Louisville captured the title in the mixed 90+ race, and John Elgart and Larry Wolff of Sacramento, Calif. won the men’s 110+ category.
 
With three days of criterium racing left on the program, the women’s 30-34, 35-39, 40-44 and 45-49 categories will be featured Friday at Churchill Downs.
